Oops, darn it...

Is 170’ a standard/typical hoist height for winch recovery’s of personnel? Not knowing anything about SAR helicopter techniques, is this a best height for wind/buffeting effects, vision, etc, or is there something I’m missing?

Keeping high due to an unstable airplane and personnel most likely standing on the wings.

(From a military site)
If a Black Hawk were hovering, it
would have to be well over 160 feet to achieve a rotor wash less than 30 mph.

The Pave-Hawk is capable of lifting up to 595 lbs on the hoist 195 ft.

Interesting info on the Pave Hawk

Here's a little mishap from last sunday near my airport.
Airplane is totaled but other than a cut on his hand the pilot was unscathed.
The fire dept spokesman told the newspaper that he avoided injury by performing "a classic pilot maneuver"
in wrapping his airplane around that tree.
Where do they get this stuff?

The fire dept spokesman was likely tired of listening to dumb questions from that reporter and decided that this response would keep him/her quiet.

trees are your friends, big springs that absorbs the energy.... little hard on the equipment...

That's interesting. From reading the story I was wondering why they didn't drop off another battery or whatever it was that kept him from starting the plane.

It was a hand-propped T-craft and perhaps at 72 years of age he just ran out of muscle.

There was a local Cessna floatplane that ended up mostly underwater in a very small shallow lake last September. One wing, tail, and detached float were visible. Pilot survived. Second hand story was engine stopped due to ? and he used up some energy via adjacent trees before landing. Not sure what the plan was but other options were rough open areas nearby covered with tussocks and brush, but no large trees. Tough choices.

Not sure why. The FAA was all over it when they showed up. They even ramped the Northern Pioneer helicopter when it landed

oh, will probably show up in tomorrows report... it's dates are listed by when ENTERED into database, not when event occurred...

It's been a few days but now they are extracting it from the snow I thought I'd share the photos.

There was some initial reports and hope that this United Express jet landed on the runway in Presque Isle Maine earlier this week, amid heavy snow on their second approach, and simply slid off a greasy runway.

But the few photos published online do seem to support the passenger reports they landed beside the runway....

The ILS was notam'd out of service an hour after the airport was closed (presumably due to incident) - no idea if that was due to the incident or there was an actual issue with it.
