    Oops, darn it...

FlipFlop has gone on to other pursuits, and SJ is so busy these days. I'm going to continue the tradition of posting the NTSB preliminary reports of our aviation mishaps. The purpose is as always: Figure out what went wrong and learn from it.

Please, no politics, and keep the speculation to a minimum. Some of these folks we know and some we don't. Those we know will eventually post their version of the mishap, and hopefully the rest of us will learn from that.

    So, here we go:

This is a stretch if this damage is considered reportable as defined under NTSB 830 Regs. Gary

Nope, read NTSB 830: Any damage to a control surface is there, I believe.

I think the word BALLANCED is in that. BALLANCED as in a Cessna control with WEIGHTS...... Is how I have always read it....

Otherwise, I'm way behind in reporting the hell I have put my tail feathers through.

Okay, but please keep it constructive, and not personal. Everyone seems to already know this, but it's about the only ground rule I could think of, so there it is.

You're welcome, everyone! But since I'm basically lazy, I hope y'all fly safe so I don't have to post many more of these reports.

Whatever you think of Maules & Maule-drivers, we can learn from their mistakes. The airplane is registered in NY, but the accident happened in Utah, long way from home.

No SuperCubs, but sort of similar. Memorial Day weekend is coming up and I know everyone has plans to fly somewhere. Please, please, please, be careful, do a real pre-flight (including WX & TFRs), and check fuel and get some more if there's any doubt. Have fun this weekend!

Anne, FlipFlop will be happy to see that you've taken over! Thanks Chica!!

I appreciate hearing that a C195 can land in a parking lot, but I have visions of Wal-mart shoppers running for their lives....

Parking lots & football fields - I've often wondered, as I fly over them, if they do indeed make a decent emergency landing spot. Hopefully I won't find out first-hand.

One of our favorite types in one of our favorite places, a Beaver in Talkeetna (Rust's):

FlipFlop, it's an honor to be taking this over from you. Thanks for starting the idea of a safety thread, and trying to make us more aware of "what's out there." I just wish there weren't as much to post.

Brenda, see you in a week or so??

Good to hear from you, TJ. Thanks for the comment.

Okay, not to be preachy or anything, but looking at yesterday's description of accidents & incidents, one thing stands out: folks don't know how to land an airplane. Any airplane. I'm not pointing fingers, since I've been guilty too. The preliminary reports, which I use here, don't report winds or weather, so it's hard to tell what's the main factor, other than "Pilot Error."

Here's the list just from one day (the boxes are just remnants of copying, not a highlight):

AIRCRAFT WENT OFF THE RUNWAY, GREENWOOD, IN

AIRCRAFT FORCE LANDED IN A FIELD, NEAR HAZLETON, PA

AIRCRAFT FORCE LANDED IN A FIELD, NEAR HOWARD, SD

AIRCRAFT LANDED SHORT OF THE RUNWAY, RIVERTON, WY

AIRCRAFT ON LANDING, WENT OFF THE RUNWAY AND THE GEAR COLLAPSED, PHOENIX, AZ

AIRCRAFT ON LANDING, WENT OFF THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND STRUCK A SIGN, FULLERTON, CA

AIRCRAFT ON LANDING, NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED, LAKEWOOD, NJ

AIRCRAFT ON A FORCED LANDING ON A HIGHWAY, STRUCK A POWERLINE, 4 MILES FROM COLFAX, WA

AIRCRAFT LANDED IN A FIELD AND FLIPPED OVER, NEAR DELMAR, DE

AIRCRAFT LANDED GEAR UP, GLADWIN, MI

AIRCRAFT ON LANDING, STRUCK 2 DEER, LINDEN, MI

AIRCRAFT ON LANDING, STRUCK THE PROP, WESTERLY, RI

AIRCRAFT ON LANDING, SUSTAINED UNKNOWN DAMAGE, SAN ANTONIO, TX

AIRCRAFT LANDED GEAR UP, CHARLESTON, WV

Agree; I think the Feds should ban "folks" from flying any airplanes. Gary
