Oops, darn it...

"..The pilot reported that a postaccident examination revealed that a 6-inch portion of the propeller was missing. .."

I wonder how many hours were on the propeller before it seperated?

those type props just like to do that, but the ones I heard of were only 2" or 3" ..... still it's shutdown/landing time...

Man ohhhhh man glad i dont have one of them there super cubs. looking at all the ntsb reports I think I will stick to the short wing death trap. never ever started to ground loop or crash for unknown reasons. kinda think some need remedial training on how to use there feet and rudder and control the bird in a crosswind or heck just landing into the wind for that matter.

Fly safe everyone and please use your feet and head before landing and takeing off. we are given these birds as caretakers of them to pass on to the next generation.
I know there are many circumstances that we dont know about in these misshaps but to read all the groundloops is just plane crazy.

John, from the NTSB database, PA-18s only, from 8/1/11 to 7/31/12, there were 54 accidents/incidents, including 7 fatalities. Of course, these are only the ones that get reported. I suspect that many fender-benders out in the middle of a field don't get reported.

This report makes it seem like more (as if 54 in one year weren't enough) because I include Supercub cousins (ie, Pacers), and look-alikes (ie, Huskies), and sometimes airplanes like Beavers or Stinsons.

Hope this answers your question.

Anne.

Sorry Kirby, it goes like this:

Cause: Someone bends an airplane.
Effect: It gets posted.

Not the other way around.

Anne.

Not a happy weekend for everyone: 9 fatalities in various makes & models of GA airplanes. Richard Bach wrecked, a Heritage Flight Museum plane struck a sign on takeoff, groundloops, flipping over, hitting stuff, you name it & it happened this weekend.

Just want to tell everyone to please be careful out there. Attended a funeral service on Saturday for a friend that died in a trike crash over a week ago. He was giving rides to fellow members of our local EAA Chapter. His passenger was also injured. We all read these posting with little care and effect until one of these people is a friend. That is when a person starts to think of his/er flying habits and realizes things that we do sometimes are 'risky' and might need to be reevaluated. Steps should be taken to make sure we enjoy our flying with the utmost of safety and care. Still mourning the lose of a friend.
Keith

Keith, my condolences to you, and your friend's family and friends. Aviation is a risky venture, and you're right, we need to be sure we're as careful as we can be, given the parameters of flight. People are depending on us as spouses, parents, and friends.

Anne.

See post #117:

NTSB Identification: ANC12LA103
14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation
Accident occurred Friday, September 07, 2012 in Homer, AK
Aircraft: PIPER PA-18-150, registration: N3214D
Injuries: 1 Uninjured.
This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been completed. NTSB investigators may not have traveled in support of this investigation and used data provided by various sources to prepare this aircraft accident report.

On September 7, 2012, about 1700 Alaska daylight time, a Piper PA-18-150 airplane, N3214D, presumably sustained substantial damage during a forced ditching, following a loss of engine power near Homer, Alaska. The certificated private pilot was not injured. The flight was being operated as a visual flight rules (VFR) personal cross-country flight under 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 when the accident occurred. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed. The flight originated at the Homer Airport, about 1600.

In a telephone conversation with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigator-in-charge (IIC), the pilot stated that he was attempting to land at an off-airport site in a coastal fjord approximately 35 nautical miles east of Homer. During the approach, at approximately 400 feet above ground level, he noticed that "the propeller looked like it was not spinning at the right RPM." He applied carburetor heat, and increased the throttle control, but the engine did not respond. From that point, he was unable to reach the intended landing site, and the airplane impacted water about 20 yards from shore.

The pilot was able to exit the airplane, and he activated his 121.5 MHz Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT), but he was not located until September 10, when he was spotted by an overflying airplane. As of February 1, 2009, monitoring of 121.5 MHz ELT analog transmissions by all search and rescue satellites was terminated. On that date, only digital, 406 MHz ELT transmissions could be received by the satellites.

The pilot reported that he attempted to secure the airplane to the shore, but tides and water flow swept the airplane into the fjord toward open water.

The airplane has not been recovered.
