Your taking the time and effort to research and post this info. You post what you want. If I don't like it, I can spend my own time on one!
Your doing a fine job. Thank You.
TJ.

Good to hear from you, TJ. Thanks for the comment.

Okay, not to be preachy or anything, but looking at yesterday's description of accidents & incidents, one thing stands out: folks don't know how to land an airplane. Any airplane. I'm not pointing fingers, since I've been guilty too. The preliminary reports, which I use here, don't report winds or weather, so it's hard to tell what's the main factor, other than "Pilot Error."

Here's the list just from one day (the boxes are just remnants of copying, not a highlight):

AIRCRAFT WENT OFF THE RUNWAY, GREENWOOD, IN

AIRCRAFT FORCE LANDED IN A FIELD, NEAR HAZLETON, PA

AIRCRAFT FORCE LANDED IN A FIELD, NEAR HOWARD, SD

AIRCRAFT LANDED SHORT OF THE RUNWAY, RIVERTON, WY

AIRCRAFT ON LANDING, WENT OFF THE RUNWAY AND THE GEAR COLLAPSED, PHOENIX, AZ

AIRCRAFT ON LANDING, WENT OFF THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND STRUCK A SIGN, FULLERTON, CA

AIRCRAFT ON LANDING, NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED, LAKEWOOD, NJ

AIRCRAFT ON A FORCED LANDING ON A HIGHWAY, STRUCK A POWERLINE, 4 MILES FROM COLFAX, WA

AIRCRAFT LANDED IN A FIELD AND FLIPPED OVER, NEAR DELMAR, DE

AIRCRAFT LANDED GEAR UP, GLADWIN, MI

AIRCRAFT ON LANDING, STRUCK 2 DEER, LINDEN, MI

AIRCRAFT ON LANDING, STRUCK THE PROP, WESTERLY, RI

AIRCRAFT ON LANDING, SUSTAINED UNKNOWN DAMAGE, SAN ANTONIO, TX

AIRCRAFT LANDED GEAR UP, CHARLESTON, WV

Agree; I think the Feds should ban "folks" from flying any airplanes. Gary

# 42 J-5 is a friend who was spotting for a tuna boat.Story is he was coming in still 12 miles off shore when the engine lost power.Still had fuel.Did not flip on the landing/ditching and he got a call off on the radio before he went in.Plane floated for almost two hours while he watched from his raft.Coast Guard jet found him first and the helo and the tuna boat he was spotting for reached him at the same time.Boat picked him up he's ok.Plane sank in almost 300ft of water.

For all the AK COOK INLET guys, N466RV is down just south of Granite point Shirleyville area. Been there for a couple days. looks like bad crash anyone know anything.

Glad to hear the J5 pilot is okay. That must be pretty scary to ditch in the ocean. There's nothing in the preliminary NTSB reports yet on N466RV. Here's hoping everyone is okay.

8GCBC, you're welcome. I hope that we're all learning what not to do from these postings. We keep screwing up (me included, though not lately!), but maybe not as badly or as often as if we didn't try to figure out what went wrong. The worst part of this job is posting fatalities, which fortunately, doesn't happen too often.

It is the AK Airman's raffle cub: http://alaskaairmen.org/?attachment_id=3835
Sure was pretty!

Sierra Bravo, I've learned there are a lot of landing accidents, which tells me that we need to pay more attention to conditions while landing. Wind speed and direction, final approach speed, anything on or near the runway, minimum of distraction from the radio or passenger, anything that takes our concentration off landing and roll-out. Do a quick browse, and you'll see landing accidents are our biggest bugaboo.

Takeoffs cause problems too, and often have more severe consequences than landings. High angle of attack, low speed, close to the ground.

A few in-cruise accidents; my guess is poor fuel management.

We don't learn a lot from an individual report, but rather from all the reports taken together. Unfortunately, the NTSB doesn't often report the weather conditions in these preliminary reports, which I think would help the picture.

These postings are mostly a reminder for us. Since many of us have been flying for a long time, we already have the sight picture of weather and fuel in our heads. I'd be really, really happy if there was nothing for me to post.

Anne.

8889D belongs to a friend of mine.... The kid that is flying for him simply lost it during landing, low time tail wheel pilot.... Got the left wing, gear and elevator. Fuselage and engine are OK.... Will probably be doing the repair on it next winter if he can get it down here.

Brian.

I keep wondering if the percentage of these landing deals with big tires is higher per hour then standard? My excuse to my wife is that they are a safety item and another form of insurance. I LOVE them, but I do think we get to feel invincible almost and end up in some crazy places because of them.

PS: Now I am not changing my kind of flying anytime soon either. It is so darn much fun.

I doubt its the tires, knowing when your not 100% on top of your game is just as much skill.

I agree, It's a percentage game, if you can stay in the upper 85 percent of your game your ok. If you drop below that Anne is going to post a report about you.

Glenn

I think people should be trained how to use big tires and stay proficient in their use, just like any other piece of new equipment. And I agree with John, sometimes you go places you shouldn't, just because you think the big tires will "save" you. Sometimes it's the simple things that bite us (like John Denver: where's the fuel selector?). Any errors involving tires will show up in the final NTSB report as "Pilot Error."

Anne.
