Wing Tip Shape Summary

Bill Rusk

BENEFACTOR
Sandpoint, Idaho
In researching wing tips I have come up with the following Names. It would be nice if folks that have any of these tips could post pictures from a couple of angles and describe them, installation notes, impressions etc. There are so many tips I thought it might be nice if we could get all the info in one place.

Sullivan
Dakota
Crosswinds
Demers
Stewarts
Horner
Hindricks
Madras
Plane Boosters
Ferguson

others?

Thanks

Bill

My PA18A-150 has Ferguson booster tips. They extend about 18 inches past the aileron.

some versions/copies can be very thick and heavy, most not...
adds some wing area...

dakota is kinda a mini version like this, maybe 5" wide...

IMG_4463.jpgIMG_4464.jpgIMG_4465.jpg

might want to add to list:
just squared off no tip,
above with a plate that goes an inch beyond
and standard cub round wing...
then there is round cub front with back squared off?? or is it the other way around????

These are the D&E tips. I am not sure who makes them but Ernie said they are Semi-Horner style.

Seen some of the Crosswind tips, most had wrinkles in them where they had been bent:???:

comments as to them were that they flew nice, but any cross wind, especially when on a cross slope with the wind going downhill, (like wind in evening going from hill to water, will put your wing down and your tip gets modified.

Also some comments about brush and the tips not getting along, very weak at the trailing tip...

I will ask a guy that still flies them when I see him next what he thinks after about 10 years with them...

Here are some comparison photos of the Sullivan (white ) and the Dakota (black) wing tips. The originals are in my photo gallery if you want to see the full size pics.

Here is a caparison picture of Sullivan tips to stock.... I did this conversion on a Pacer....

27001_380708280215_79219185215_4328817_6021073_n.jpg

Tip covered and painted, fiberglass removeable.... I prefer to be able to remove the tips for maintenance reasons...

Demer Tip on our Pacer....

27071_384682625215_79219185215_4440653_6659193_n.jpg

Sullivan tip....

27071_384682630215_79219185215_4440654_4335663_n.jpg

Note the difference in distance from the end of the aileron to the end of the tip in both examples.
The biggest complaint I have heard from people using the tips that leave a lot of surface area past the aileron is that they lose some aileron control at slow speeds. This is due to the fact that they are now pushing that extra surface out past the aileron. The best thing to do when using these tips on an experimental is to either extend the aileron out to the tip or move the aileron and extend the flaps.... So far, there is not an approved mod to do this on certified airplanes.

URL to a bunch of pictures I took when doing the conversion work....

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.380707780215.166470.79219185215&type=1

From my understanding a lot of the tips you have listed are the same tip but renamed as they were sold to other companies....
For example....
Demers and Madras tips are the same.
Plane Booster and Ferguson are the same and is now Cub Crafters. CC has changed the tip profile to make it their own.
Sullivan and Hindricks are the same.
All the rest are stand alone tips..... Stewarts is the only tip listed that is not a fiberglass tip but simply a different bow shape to the tip and fabric covered.

Brian.

I am pretty sure Day & Night(Sullivan) has STC for this, -18, not sure which others..(it was like 17+ years ago, remember having a Day & Night drawing/blue print)

This is GREAT stuff folks. Keep pictures and info coming. This will be the definitive wing tip resource thread.

That would be nice.... When I did the tips on the Pacer we looked and did not find any "current" STC's available... If it became available, that airplane would be back in my shop and getting modified.

Brian.

"Wing tip" - That portion of a wing where the owner starts sweeping the snow off....again.

Three months of continuous snowfall makes this pilot grumpy. I long for the day with more than a quarter mile visibility.

Bingo - the Day & Night (Sullivan/Hendrick) tips are STC'd for the -18 STC SA427AL. I believe that you can install the wing tips without installing the Day & Night square tail (STC SA589AL). However, the square tail STC requires installation of the wing tips per the STC text. Field approval deviations (i.e. different tips with the square tail) have been obtained in the past. YMMV depending on what flavor of Fed is looking at your field approval request. Links to the STCs:

Hey Brian (Steve's Aircraft) - here is a list of all the other Sullivan wing tip STCs (Ronald E. Sullivan P Star Route A, Box 1549, Anchorage, AK 99507) I put the address because there are two addresses in the FAA database and the tip STCs are under this one. I also guess that the holder has changed from Day & Night to just Ron now. Here's the list:

SA427AL - PA-18
SA453AL - PA-22
SA476AL - PA-12
SA478AL - PA-16
SA479AL - PA-20

Hope that helps and sorry for the thread creep Bill.

Dakota wings, tips, aileron moved outboard, flaps extended are STC'd, add a slot too.

Aerodon - Just so no one is confused, the Dakota tips are only STC'd on a Dakota wing. I am not saying that they cannot be field approved (337) but they are not STC'd on any wing except a Dakota wing. Also, to the best of my knowledge Dakota does not have any data to support a 337 application for the tips on a non-Dakota wing. With all of that said, I am pretty willing to bet that somebody on here would share a successful Dakota tip 337 with you in support of a similar application. There are plenty of Dakota tips on non-Dakota wings to testify to that but as always - YMMV depending on what flavor of Fed you are standing in front of.

has not been a problem at all to use them on others..... up here at least....YMMV

The aileron moved out on the Dakota wing is only approved on their built up wing. There is an STC to square the Pacer wing and use the Dakota tip but still have a large area outboard of the aileron.

On a certified PA-18, are all tips considered equal? Any clear winner performance wise?

These are the Randy Apling (8856Charlie) carbon fiber wing tips. I weighed one today and it is 16 ounces. It has a built in light pad and fits great.

Looking at Gunny's pictures it looks like the Dakota tips don't add much length to the wing at the trailing edge. Am I correct? It seems to follow then that they would allow for a little better roll rate than say the Sullivan or the D&E tips. This thread is very timely as I am looking to replace the Wingtips on my BackCountry wings. I have the original Smith droopy tips and do would like a tip that does not droop. I have the squared wings with long ailerons.

Gerald - Here's a shot of my Cub from behind so you can see the spacing of tip trailing edge to aileron edge. Bear in mind that this is the Dakota wing with the ailerons moved outboard so there would be a bit more space on a stock wing - but not as much compared to say the Sullivans. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong or post a pic of the Dakota tips on a stock (ailerons not moved) wing. The inserted pics here are small but the links below should open the big ones that are easy to see the tips on. The little pics are here so you can find the big ones in my gallery if the link doesn't work and so the dial up guys don't bum out (is anybody still on dial up????).
Hope this helps.

Correct; in fact, on experimental airplanes we have supplied wing tips for we recommend trimming the rib tail to ensure the best fit. Of course, that is an as-needed kind of thing as there are often subtle and not-so-subtle variations between different airplanes.

Gunny,
The tips I put on the Pacer are Sullivan tips... I was referring to moving the ailerons out using those tips and many other tips that are similar in installation.

Mike,
I talked to Ron when I was doing that conversion and he did not have a STC at the time to move the ailerons for the Pacer. Might for the -18, but did not ask that at the time.

These are SmithCub Tips the original ones that came with the Smith Kit. I don't think they are the same as furnished with the BackCountry Kit now.

Are there any tips available or has any one made tips that include a fence?

Brian (Steve's aircraft)... when you added the Sullivan tips to your Pacer could you have installed them without extending the wing? oi meand could you have cut off the spare extention to equal the original wing span? Or does the STC prohibit that?
