Upgrade to 0-320

I have purchased Roger Borer STC to upgrade my PA18-105 (flaps, balanced tail, heel brakes, dual 18gal tanks, 0-235, 31"ABW) to a 0-320 (no model specified in STC). Also purchased STC to raise gross to 1750 lbs. I would like opinions on:
1) Which model/HP of 0-320 to upgrade to (assume open on this since not specified in STC, thinking 160HP)?
2) Does baffling, exhaust, starter, alt, mags, all work with new engine?
3) Placement of oil cooler (prefer rear cooler so nose cowl modification isn't necessary).
4) Prop type and pitch (takeoff and landing performance most important)?

My current 0-235 is excellent running low time on factory overhaul and in great shape but need more HP for higher elevation WY-MT flying. I understand I need a new engine mount to comply with AD.

Any thoughts and help are appreciated.

The baffles have the mounting holes in the opposite location on the O-235 than the O-320. The 150 hp engine mount will have two finger patches welded at the lower right engine lug cluster and the O-235 and O-290 will not. More is better relative to horse power but I would want to read the STC wording to be sure it applies to the 160 hp version of the O-320.

Thanks Steve. So I assume new baffling is needed or can you modify the 0-235 ones? The STC is silent on HP and suffix of the 0-320 (just says 0-320). Which suffix of 0-320 is the 160HP version in most SC's and are there any serial numbers to stay away from?

Sounds kind of like the Kenmore STC on the -12's. Not to change the subject but your odometer shows over 4 Billion posts....in 3 months!!!!!!!!!

...So I assume new baffling is needed or can you modify the 0-235 ones? ...

We reused the O-290 baffling when installing an O-320. I don't know about O-235 baffling. We needed to fill lots of holes. The baffling doesn't quite fit to the case in the back, but the gap is fillable. Looks a little ugly, but quite functional.

The O-320 with no dash number is the same as a -A series which is the 150 hp version. The -B series is the 160 hp version.
These are the models you are interested in from the type certificate data sheet.

NOTE 5. The above models incorporate additional characteristics as follows:
O-320 Models Characteristics
O-320 Basic model - four cylinder, horizontally opposed air cooled, direct drive with
automotive type generator and starter, provides for single acting controllable pitch
propeller.
O-320-A1A Same as O-320, model designation change only.
O-320-B1A Same as O-320-A1A except for compression ratio, fuel grade and rating.
O-320-A1B, -B1B Same as O-320-A1A and -B1A respectively except have straight bore carburetor riser.
O-320-A2A, -A2B,
and -B2A, -B2B
Same as O-320-A1A, -A1B, -B1A and B1B respectively except have no provisions for
controllable pitch propellers.
O-320-A2D Same as O-320-E3D except crankcase machined for conical instead of Dynafocal
mounts.
O-320-A3A, -A3B,
-B3A, and -B3B
Same as O-320-A1A, -A1B, -B1A, and -B1B respectively except have provisions for
7/16" propeller attaching bolts.
O-320-A2C, -A3C Same as O-320-A2B and -A3B respectively, except for magnetos.
O-320-B2C, -B3C Same as O-320-B2B and -B3B respectively, except for magnetos.
O-320-B2D Same as O-320-D1D except conical engine mounts and no prop governor
O-320-B2E Similar to –B2B except carburetor located same as O-320-D models
O-320-C2A, -C2B,
-C3A, -C3B
Same as O-320-B2A, -B2B, -B3A and B3B respectively, except have O-320-A series,
low compression pistons, reduced ratings and lower grade fuel requirements.
O-320-C1A, -C1B,
-C2C, -C3C
Same as O-320-B1A, -B1B, -B2C, -B3C respectively, except have been converted to low
compression pistons.

I will have an 80/80 compression ~400hr (since factory overhaul) in a couple months. Flying regularly in my cub right now. Hate to part with it, but will once I install the upgrade.

I bought new baffles from airfrorms in AK for my 290 - 320 swap. Excellent workmanship on the parts, they are certified, and it's one less thing to deal with, well worth the $800

I personally don't like using the Vans baffles on a cub. They are designed for a tightly cowled 180mph airplane not a 90 mph cub.

Piper, have not decided, will probably sell with mount, baffles...

Jason, have CC baffles coming already unfortunately. Airforms sounds good.

0-320 installed, new Borer 43 pitch, new rear mount cub crafters oil cooler, cc baffles with felt, new skytec starter, interav alternator, and new piper engine mount. Used same exhaust and air filter/intake asssembly. Very happy with performance and installation. Thanks for everyone's help.

Congrats on the upgrade! I have been thinking about doing the same to my O235-C, PA18-105. I have balanced tail feathers but no flaps, does this STC require flaps? Who can I contact to purchase the STC? Thanks, Den

All the stc for O320s require flaps. I am in the prosses of adding flaps and 160 HP plus a lot of other mods. The plus side i will have the plane i want down side i could have sold my cub and bought a cub cheaper than rebuilding one and no down time.

Don't you have to add ribs to the wings and more braces to the frame? I have contemplated doing this, but it seemed like the weight would change the way the cub flies.

Meetwo, I do have flaps but the STC SA136AL doesn't say flaps are required for PA18-105. No braces to frame or wing mods are required, just new engine mount, baffling and cooler. If you purchase 1750# gross weight increase STC SA292AL then 4 braces are required in rear fuselage, late cabane V, and hydrosorbs in addition to 0-320 engine. Karen Byerly sells STCs from her late father, Roger Borer, and can be contacted at 907-522-1028 Anchorage.
Doug, oil cooler is Aero Classics that comes in Cubcrafter Kit.
I now have my 497 hour factory overhauled excellent 0-235-C1 with mags, starter, Carb, baffling and mount, and climb and cruise Sensenich 44 and 52 pitch props that are available. PM for prices.

These are the only 0-320's which can be installed in a PA-18?

Is a 0-320 E2D allowed?

I am probably not upgrading anytime soon but curious- I have a 1950 PA-18 with and 0290d2 and curious what 0-320's are acceptable.

Cardiff,

I recently upgraded from an O-290-D2 to an O-320-B2B. I used the cub crafters STC as well as the Borer GW increase STC (needed to satisfy the GW requirement from cub crafters.) This was a fairly straight forward installation with a few hiccups along the way, nothing major. The biggest pain for me was cutting the fabric and welding in tubes for the GW increase to 1750.

Good luck with your future upgrade, mine is a completely different animal!

the E2D is a dynafocal mount engine. Unless the STC specifies a new Dynafocal mount, then only conical mount engines would be applicable.
