Cracked Generator Bracket......Again!

The generator bracket on my PA-12 is cracked again, for the 3rd or 4th time now in as many years. Keeps cracking where the bracket attaches to the aft bolt on the generator. We've beefed it up each time it has broken but apparently to no avail.

The engine is just a stock 150 hp 0320 using the Kenmore STC (straight mount) with, what I think, is the original generator.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Well, that eventually is the plan but, this generator is still going strong and can't make myself spend the money to switch.

I would try a new bracket or you could have a bad bearing or something in the generator. Cathy was complaining recently that her Tri-Pacer mount was loser than my Pacer. I kinda blew her off till i looked and low and behold it was broke where you describe as well as at the starter. Luckily I had another one.

someone probably overheated it and crystallized it while welding it...

Jim Woolace in North Pole balances props. That would be one of my suggestions also. I would purchase a new bracket and get the prop balanced. Torch is kept balanced by Jim.

All good suggestions.

By "beefing it up" this last time we fabricated a NEW one out of heavier, thicker stock and filled in as much of the "web" areas that we could.

Have been back forth with two props lately, one them wooden and if nothing else, it's pretty smooth and absorbs a lot of vibration. However, you guys may be onto something, the aluminum one could certainly stand to be dynamically balanced.

If I do decide to bite the bullet and convert to an alternator, what are my choices?

Thanks again.

Hi Steve, do you have a photo/drawing of the generator mounting bracket for the O-320-B2C? Or the -A1A? I got two brackets from my engine overhaul man so just wondering what the best mods are to make to fit our 20A generator?

cheers Bill

Ah that makes sense 😀

cheers Bill

we have fitted the wide deck brackets, but the pulley on the generator doesn’t align with the pulley behind the ring gear. What potential is there to alter the brackets to bring the generator in line?

cheers Bill

Don't have a wide deck with a generator but here is a narrow deck.
