    Checking ski rigging

I am checking the ski rigging with standard length gear PA-18 I just purchased and Landis 2500 skis that it came with. The front check cable is 58 1/2" and the rear cable is 36". The Cub no longer has the factory leveling hole and punch mark on the rear door hinge. Is there another way to level the Cub to check the ski rigging? Right now the ski rigging is set 1 degree up from the bottom door frame. Thanks for any help. I will post in the members area pictures of the ski dollies I made for it today.

With the Cub leveled the skis are rigged level as well with 60 pounds on the Atlee springs. I thought 2 to 3 degrees nose up from level is the accepted rigging for skis. How are others rigging their Landis Skis?
    Thanks;

There's an old thread on it somewhere, but I can't find it. Someone that knows how to use the search thing will be able to find it.

    AC 43.13.....
rear cable...0 to 5 degrees nose up
front cable ...20 to 35 degrees nose down
Tension on bungee/spring...ski load rating 1500-3000....20-40#.
For level.. as Mike says, firewall vertical or level the tube on bottom of the door.

Thanks for the input. I'll have it out later this month when it warms up a bit.

I have the cable measurements for stock gear and 3" extended gear for Landis 2500's. The 3" lengths I came up with after a lot of messing around. Landis didn't have them, Atlee didn't have them, only stock length.

I'd rig them on the plane, as Mike and TJ outlined. Then it doesn't matter what length is needed. And, you may find out something isn't exactly straight.....

No responses on the ski cable numbers...so here's what I came up with with some fiddling...warm day here in the Copper Valley...10 above.

What I had: Landis 2000's, Standards Cub gear
    Tail Cable 30.5"
    Cutter Cable 50.5"
Front Cable to Dodge Spring 24"

I changed over to 3" Extended gear...Now here is what I ended up with.
    Tail Cable 33"
    Cutter Cable 54.5"
Front Cable to Dodge Spring 26.6"

Deflections up ( less than 5 degrees ) and down are great...test flight ok.

My measurements are from crimp end to crimp end.

This is a J-3 question, but the principle should be the same?? I have to replace the front gear attach point bolt with a longer bolt for ski tabs. Can you change that bolt out with the bungees still hooked up and not have things twist and screw up?? I thought about putting a 2x4 between the wheels to keep them spread out but not sure that would hold the top of the gear anyway.

Get the nuts off and your tools ready, drift, hammer, and the new longer bolt with the ski tab on it, and a strong friend, have him lift the wing on one side where the struts meet the wing till the wheel is off the floor, tap out the old and install the new one. Also look around the wings before you lift to make sure your not going to hit anything when the wing moves up or down.

I always keep a few different diameter bolts about 4" long with the threaded end ground smooth and semi-spherical. I grease these and use them to drive out the original bolts. My home made drift bolts will hold everything nicely together as the old bolt falls out. Now just tap the new bolt in driving the smooth tapered drift bolt out.
