Spike, a real bird dog, he doesn't wait for you to shoot them, he catches them on his own. He takes on turkeys, hawks, and catches house flies in mid air.

4 hours to get the puppy rescued after he went up the dog ramp for the first time to my office loft. Then he was afraid to go back down the ramp.

I'll be bringing home my first pup in a week. This is Eli - named after the Wrangell St. Elias Mountains.

Question for those of you who fly with your dogs - do you have any tips regarding how to introduce them to it/train them to be calm while in flight? I figure that I should obviously have someone hold him for his first few flights, but as far as taking him with me when I'm out solo and flying a Cub, how do you train the dog to sit tight while flying?

At first I ride them daily in a vehicle, preferably in the back seat if you have plans for them to ride there in a plane. Gets them used to motion and noise and periodically stop for them to relieve themselves and play. We use a chest harness to restrain them to a seat belt. That way they learn jumping about is not recommended. Then go sit in the plane for a brief time and eventually start the engine and shut it off. Offer a treat when behavior is calm as a reward. Repeat some then taxi around to get them used to that. Go fly after they become accustomed to the airplane's noise and motion.

I use mutt muffs or ear plugs to keep out the noise. Train them with that anytime. Try to climb and descend gradually and at first rub their throat to encourage swallowing to equalize their ear pressure. They soon learn to do that and find vehicles and airplanes are a fun way to go and do.

The above is great advice. When possible try to frequently take them someplace close to have a fun romp so they associate the plane with fun times. Try not to have an electronic collar on them when flying. Something in the plane avionics can trigger them sometimes to give them shocks. The memory of the shocks lasts forever. Have fun. Make certain they are restrained.

My mutt ( only part mutt, the rest is mixed breed, with a little mongrel) is a bit confused recently, since all winter he got in the habit of jumping up onto the wheel skis (easy enough to do with the 6:00 tires) after I "come home" and shut down. Now that I'm back on the 29" Airstreaks, he hasn't quite figured out the right moves. A big tire for a 10 lb., cat sized dog, but I've seen him clear jump onto a 36" high work bench, easily, again, like a cat, so I'm sure he'll get it dialed in.
