    Nose Seal

Apparently Nose Seals and my family don't play well together. Both me and Dad have tried to seal up the nose on our O-300 and C-85, but can't stop the oil from coming out. We did the service letter on the O-300 about scoring grooves and that didn't help. We've also clipped the springs a little and that didn't help.

What's the trick to getting a real good seal on a Nose Seal?

Are you greasing the lip of the seal before you install it? If not you run the risk of burning it from the friction which can cause it to leak.

Continental didn't have much luck getting them to seal either. Someplace there is an old service bulletin about gluing a felt ring on the outside of the seal to soak up the oil on the O-300's. Rotten Continentals I think their like radials if their not leaking oil there's no oil in them.

Dang Nathan, I know how you feel. Fortunately I have always been able to fix them with the crosshatch.

Try using distributor cam lube grease on the sealing lip, Bosch brand seamed to work the best.

    Just call me, "Lucky"....

I reckon I'm just lucky. I've had several continentals, including a C-145, and none of them leaked at the nose seal. I flew that old C-170B over 1000 hours, and not a drop??? My wife's Champ has a C-85, and it doesn't leak. I wouldn't call "Continentals" a rotten engine either since they don't have the AD's Lycoming engines have.

Actually most engine manuals explicitly say to not use grease, just a very little bit of oil so the seal can break in correctly. Trying to prevent wear by greasing the crank will cause the seal to never break in and it will always leak.
