Steve,
Cafi has a good point. you might want to start listening to her now. :D

Put some water in your tin can and see what happens. quite amazing for that little bullet.

Steve, I am still trying to get her to listen to me. She keeps saying "naaa naaa naaa naaa naa" and has her hands over her ears. I don't have any plan to shoot at the mice in the house... well, maybe the thought crossed my mind with the bb gun. It was a poor attempt at humor.

I've done the water can thing with a .22 before, it won't be water for long here though, 12 degrees yesterday morning!

What I can't quite figure out is how do you expect to shoot mice?

They never show up when you're just sitting there???

One must be very very patient.. you know, kinda like me...

Shot gun works good in the house. I know a guy that used one on a possum that was under the floor.

SJ the gun toten' mouse killer. Who would have thought?

You can also get some .22 caliber bird shot. Holes in your floor will be so small you wont notice. :D

Cabela's in East Grand Forks doesn't have a plane hanging from the ceiling, thankfully. I too hate to see good equipment "on display" rather than flying, and that applies to museums to some degree as well.

My limited experience with Cabela's is that their gun prices and selection is pretty good, but the rest of their stuff is not very good quality, much of it made in China, and most of it overpriced. They do have some name brand stuff, good quality, but it seems like that stuff is really overpriced...

But, the guns.....some pretty good sales as well, if you watch the ads.

Steve,

You can get pretty hooked on clearing starlings or mice with .22 rat shot - and it won't go through your hangar roof or walls....

True confession: before I sealed my hangar tight with a good fitting door, I once tracked a bird across the hangar ceiling and did accidentally shoot a VG off the Cub....!

......when I entered Cabela's, was the first thing I saw was a real J-3 Cub hanging from the celling. What a waste of a good airplane. ............
Ditto. Pretty cool looking, but a waste of a good airplane. I was eyeballing it pretty hard when a store clerk told me it was a mock-up....naw, it was the real deal. I looked up the tail number, it's an 85 horse J3 registered last year to someone in New York. I couldn't quite figger out how they had rigged the prop to turn.
I wen there about a week after they opened, looked at the guns for sale and the diorama-style display of all the full-body mounts. Didn't have the time patience or inclination to look thru all the camo gear, fishing lures, etc. Not too bad a display of used long guns, that's kind of hard to find in this day of chain stores. Not as good as Kesselrings used to be though....

You think that's a waste... we have a Beaver hanging in our Bass Pro here in Ontario. Now I don't mind being under a beaver from time to time... but I'd sure like to bring that one down and put it back into service.

I believe the guy I bought my Cuby from has been selling Cubs to Cabela. From what I was told they are built up from unairworthy junk airframes, with a new cover and fresh paint. Heard he was getting $25,000 for them.

We've got one of the earlier stores here in OWA Minnesota. No airplane hanging here!

I've always been satisfied with Cabela's guarantee - they do replace things without asking.

What I have seen is a different store since they went public a while back. They hire more part time employees, fewer true product specialists who know what they sell and can give good advice. Now, much more of a big box store trying to make a profit for their shareholders. And a decline in the quality of their items too.

But I still go there - much too often. And our's is just 1 mile away from a nice airport so it's a good reason to fly!

Last week at Outdoor World in Springfield MO I got to talking with an old girl who works there, she worked for the Morris family liquor stores 35 yrs ago when Johnny was making bass lures by hand and selling them in the liquor stores. Said she doesnt see much of little Johnny anymore.

If you really want some practice....we can take down the little tin foil things and solve the "bird" problem here (woodpeckers have gotten sophisticated...have chosen houses in lieu of trees) once and for all.

My doc neighbor told me to get this stuff they like and they stay there long enough for you to get a good shot at them.

I wonder if he makes house calls. :)

bb's

I haven't tried hunting mice with a BB gun yet indoors...but have used a shotgun (.410) with the shot taken out of the shotshell. It wasn't as effective as I thought..although it may have made them deaf :)
A word of caution....22 cal. birdshot works great inside a building for rats, mice, sparrows etc...but you may want to consider wearing safety glasses....had a few close calls.

HA! Randy, it is nice to know that I can learn vicariously via my friends misadventure!

The mice seem to be at bay, waiting for me to leave town.

You can always get a cat. Mine brought in two today.

But then you have cat crap and cat hair and cat pee to deal with! I'd rather just tame the mice!

Did every one miss the fact that Cabelas is Kinda Pilot friendly or is it only part of them. The original one in Sidney NE will pick you up at the airport, and if you call unicom on the way the FBO will give them a call and the van will be there waiting. The one in Wheeling, West Virgina does and I belive the one in Prairie du Chien, WI does. And the one in Kearney NE is right at the corner of the airpot. The almost have a runway at the back door. The one in Sidney get pilots from all over CO and WY flying in. They may not be the best store but they sure found out how to cash in on the fact that we are always looking for a place to go. Cabeles keeps the FBO at Sidney alive.

Dave's Famuos indoor mouse load

Take a 22 LR cartridge and pull the bullet but leave all the powder. Now take a bar of good dry hand soap and shave soap until the case is packed full and packed, If you have BIG mice you can even build a little soap shaped bullet on top of the case. Make several then get your trusty 22 pistol and your ready to roll! It will kill mice up to maybe 20', will break windows but nor do much to wood or floors. its only 1/3 as loud as with the bullet. I have never had any issues using them for 30 years but use caution and proceed at your own risk.

Car Stopper.

Dave, that brings back memories. I haven't did the soap & 22 for awhile.
One of my favorites was to make my own slugs out of 3" 4Buck, cutting around the shell just above the brass until nearly through it, now you've got a slug  . This was back in the day, I assume no responsibility for today.

Our cabelas J3 on floats looks like it is fake.

Water rudders are down, prop was spinning the wrong way last time I was there. I talked to 'em about it, has it been taken care of ?

I think that J-3 was mocked up by the guys in Belle Fourche SD. Might be wrong, but I recall talking with them on the trip out to Idaho in '04, but MMR was with and we'd been in the Oldstyle, so I could be wrong !!

Just used my Gift certificate from them; ended up spending twice the amount of the certificate on a belt and two pairs of shorts!.....good marketing they have..lol

Bill Tracy, an ACcurate review of Cabellas. Why, just last month, there was one of George's Supercub Breakfast Runs (with more Skywagons than cubs  . Owing to extremely substandard weather at Oshkosh, we diverted to Sidney. Nice chat with the VERY good FBO, and MUCH money passed to Cabellas.

There's normally a good airport car at Kearney; tell FBO Clyde "HI" from cubscout.

Then there was that familiar-looking PA-18-95 at the Stearman Fly-In at St. Francis this year...... :D

We need to organise another Oshkosh flyin in, oh, late July or so....

Thanks. cubscout

Cabellas

I went to the new Cabellas Like RedRooster did in Olyimpia Wash. and seen the J-3. Also seen the N numbers on the tail but did not write it down. Glad he did, Its real alright. So is the plane in Utah at Cabellas.
I did see the sale room and went in there. Mostly new returns ect. Then I noticed a pair of shoes on the shelf for $40. marked down from $85.00. They were half price and half worn out as well. One shoe had the inner sole wore out and the bottom of the shoes still had mud in the soles. Never seen that before. Nice store, good collection of animals and guns ect. aquarium is smaller than the one in Utah. Always fun.
