Early C-180 fuel selector valve rebuild

1954C180

Registered User
Hey guys, I ordered some new O-rings and a top gasket to facilitate the
rebuild of the fuel selector valve on my '54 C-180. Well the O-rings and
gasket showed up in the mail yesterday, but upon disassembly of the
valve, something ain't right....

The illustrated parts manual (figure 138-16) says the end fittings use an
MS29513-116 "fuel resistant" o-ring, but an MS29513-116 o-ring is a
smaller animal than what was on my fuel selector valve (see pictures
below).

What's the deal here? Is the parts book correct? And has
someone "been into" this fuel selector valve and assembled
it with incorrect seals? Or is the parts book wrong?

TIA,

No wonder it leaked. Looks to me like they used the wrong seal, or it failed and got squished. I think the parts book is correct.

That seal is old and deformed.
Use the new one. Lube it up with some petroleum jelly. We used to use some fuel resistant sealer called gastite when we were doing fuel valve and pumps.
My tube is lot in the bowel of the shop so I can't get the MIl Spec.

Thanks Jay. Mike just called me and the consensus is some
gomer put the wrong seals in there previously. For what it's
worth, the selector valve had been leaking for a long time
(there were 80/87 red dye stains all over where the fuel
selector valve mounts).

Carey, we *are* working (on our 180s...!!!). :D

TIA,

Do you know the part number for this guy (red arrow)? I don’t see it in the manual.

I just went through the search for the adapter fitting, we needed the forward outlet fitting and came up with 0511196-1, no stock at Textron ($1669.00 cost). If this is actually the correct number from the parts book I was not interested at that price and was lucky enough to find one at salvage. Did not pursue the new option but I hope it was a mistake on my reading the parts book, but I don't think it was. Just one of those pieces the factory doesn't want to mess with anymore so price it out of market, like the stall switch that was at $8800.00 or the control lock at $1800 a while back.

Hydraulics supply houses would have similar in steel, with the correct (JIC) flare angle.

I think the question would be the length of the hex portion.
