Thats a tough question freestone, you have to figure what kind of flying you plan to do. HID’s typically have a life in excess of 3,000 hours or over 20,000 on/off cycles, and over 5,000 hour life is not at all uncommon especially where longer duration usage occurs. Pulsing of HID lights is strongly advised against due primarily to the 20,000 on/off cycle design capability (just do the math, 15-20 operating hours of pulsing use is what can be expected). And HID bulbs are pricey. So if I was flying trafic watch, or working around conjested area's, "pulsing" a lot, I would stick with standard.
FYI: There are 2 different styles of pluse lighting, what we've been talking about where the bulb comes on, then goes off and repeats. And then you have a more complicated system the airliners and corperate jets use. There pulsing isn't on and off, rather the lights are dimmed continuously in a range from about 30% to 100%. (The system is simply an automatic rheostat for the landing light circuit.) The net effect is that the average filament temperature of the bulb is lowered by about 40% and the bulb life is increased significantly. So you now have the benifit of pulse lighting without the added cost of going through bulbs every month.
