PA-11 takeoff

I have both a J-3 and a PA-11. The 11 does have about 1.5 degrees more engine droop than the 3, which should slightly improve the takeoff performance of the 11 (the engine is mounted lower, too). At 48 inches, It sounds like you're running way too much pitch for decent takeoff performance with an 85. I ran 38 inches for takeoff, and about 42 to 44 for cruise. By the time you get to 44, the takeoff and climb are really starting to suffer. I'd be a bit worried about the rigging with that bent rear spar -- have you checked that?

The rounded tip prop will have slightly less induced drag during climb than the clipped tip, but not in a measurable amount.

For better takeoff and climb, you might consider removable gurney flaps.
