FAA FSDO: BOISE, ID (NM11) Entry date: 05/03/2004

NTSB Identification: SEA04LA077
14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation
Accident occurred Saturday, May 01, 2004 in Laurel, MT
Aircraft: Piper PA-18-105, registration: N5483H
Injuries: 2 Uninjured.

This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been completed.

On May 1, 2004, approximately 1300 mountain daylight time a Piper PA-18-105, N5483H, registered to Professional Pilots Inc., and being operated/flown by a private pilot sustained substantial damage during a loss of control/in-flight collision with terrain while maneuvering approximately two nautical miles east of Laurel, Montana. Neither the pilot nor the passenger was injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan had been filed. The local flight, which was personal, was operated under 14 CFR 91, and originated from Billings, Montana, approximately noon.

The pilot reported to an FAA inspector that he was flying low over the Yellowstone River when he spotted animal tracks on a sand bar. The pilot then maneuvered back to look at the tracks and reported that he got "low (50 feet) and slow" and the aircraft stalled/mushed into a shallow pool near the river's edge.

thanks cuby, additionally if anyone is able to create a better narrative or story for the trailer crash i'd be interested otherwise the accident report that I figure is related is located at http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20001213X33542&key=1
I heard from one of the guys hired men that the pilot was landing in a pasture close to where his cowboys were getting ready to brand and lit too long in the slick grass to stop before hitting the horse trailer. They were still using the trailer a while back and someone had christened it the "Aircraft Carrier". I understand the pilot is now flying a Jet Ranger. That alleviates the short strip/slick grass problems completely I guess.

Hero rescues pilot of flipped seaplane
By Franci Richardson
Thursday, May 13, 2004

HALIFAX - When Alan Williamson heard the buzz of the 2002 Aviat Husky over his home yesterday, he looked out his window at Monponsett Lake and marveled how it was the perfect day for landing a float plane.

But between the ``mirror''-like lake and a hazy sun, the Hingham man piloting the plane told police he could not gauge the distance between the water and his two-seater plane, and flipped about 10:15 a.m.

``I ran out of the house and jumped off the deck, swam to my boat and sped out to the plane,'' said Williamson, 36, adding the lake is a common aircraft landing spot. ``Thank God he was out of the plane and treading water.''

Marcos Sastre, 58, suffered cuts on his face, but had the strength to board Williamson's 1996 Mastercraft ski boat and was whisked to meet police and fire officials.

Sastre said he had left Marshfield Airport and had planned to land on the lake when trouble started, said Halifax police Sgt. Ted Broderick.

``Obviously he was lucky,'' Broderick said. ``He crashed an aircraft. To walk away from this is a good thing.''

Officials estimated about 30 gallons of fuel leaked into Brockton's secondary water source. They didn't anticipate problems cleaning the lake.

The Federal Aviation Administration was on scene.

A woman who answered Sastre's phone would only say he is ``fine.''

Before Sastre got into the ambulance, he said to Williamson, ``Thank you for saving my life.''

Williamson disagreed he deserved that kind of credit, but later said, ``If I were on a lake, I'd hope somebody would come and grab me.''

The Husky was on amphibs, from the pictures on tv it looked like the gear was retracted. I saw the story on a couple of different local news programs and the coverage wasn't that bad-basically plane crashed, pilots ok, fuel was cleaned up without a problem, etc. They seemed more interested in making a hero out of the boat driver who picked the pilot up then fearmongering over a small plane crash.

Sounds like he did not judge the height above the water - i.e. glassy water...
