2022 Great Minnesota Aviation Gathering May 20-21, 2022!

BENEFACTOR
Lino Lakes MN (MY18)
Greetings, friends and Supercub.org family, please make sure that Friday and Saturday, May 20-21, 2022, are on your calendars to attend the 8th Annual Great Minnesota Aviation Gathering. We will hold the event again this year at the Buffalo Municipal Airport (KCFE).

We are putting together a terrific program again this year, and this year's event will be extra special! Roger and Darin Meggers have been kind enough to offer to bring Super Cub #1 to the GMAG and give a presentation on the history of the very first Super Cub! The Meggers are well known as superb craftsmen. AOPA utilized their services in restoring and updating the AOPA Super Cub that was given away a few years ago, a testimony to their skills and art form. I had the privilege of seeing Super Cub #1, and she is a beauty! Many of you may have seen her at AirVenture in past years, or at Sun-N-Fun.

Here are some photos...

AOPA (and many other publications) have paid tribute to the Meggers with some terrific articles (https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2014/july/pilot/f_cub), but hearing them in person is a great experience.

In addition, we have had a seaplane flight school come forward to offer a 3 hour seaplane ground school course on Friday morning, May 20. This course will be free to those who register for the GMAG ($10 per day, or complimentary for members of the MN Pilots Assn). What a deal! Attendance will be limited to those morning sessions, and registration details will follow.

We will have a total of 22 Hangar Flying Sessions, including one with Mark Baker, President of the AOPA.

We look forward to seeing you and celebrating aviation!

Randy

Thanks to the generosity and kindness of three CFI's who offer float plane training, we will be offering ground school training for seaplane operations on Friday morning, from 9-noon, May 20, 2022, at the GMAG!

Jungemann 2.jpg

Cost? Complimentary to those who are members of the MN Pilots Association, or for those non-members who pay the $10/day admission fee.

Many thanks to Mark Cook, Charles Scott and Jason Jensen for their offer. Logbook entries indicating completion of the course will be made at...well...upon completion of the course!

A great reason to attend the 2022 GMAG on Friday, May 20! Already have a float plane rating? This will be a good review, and will count for Wings credit.

Well, the schedule has been set and we are very pleased with the lineup of speakers and topics for the 2022 Great MN Aviation Gathering!

Back by popular demand is the Minnesota 99s rendition of the "Pinch Hitter/Flying Companion Seminar". Lead by Cheryl Daml, CFI, CFII, the course will be provided on Friday, May 20, from 9-noon at the Buffalo Municipal Airport (KCFE), follow the following synopsis:

Are you a non-flyer who often (or occasionally) accompanies a pilot on a flight? Do all the switches, knobs and buttons make you feel a bit intimidated? How about that radio chatter? A little like a foreign language? And maybe you feel just a little helpless and vulnerable because you don’t understand everything.

The Minnesota 99s Women Pilots will be presenting their “Pinch Hitter Course,” authored by Minnesota flight Instructor, Cheryl Daml. They believe that Knowledge is Power, and would like to help with those feelings of fear and intimidation. This course is designed to give basic knowledge to non-flyers who accompany pilots. They will help you understand what is going on inside and outside of the airplane. You and your pilot will also learn some ways that you can assist with certain tasks and add to your enjoyment of flight.

We celebrate aviation in Minnesota, and no celebration of aviation in Minnesota is complete without seaplanes.

This year we are very, very pleased to announce that Mark Cook, Charles Scott and Jason Jensen, all CFIs, will be providing a free "Float Plane Ground School" course on Friday, May 20, from 9-noon.

This school will be ground training for pilots who wish to transition to flying floats. Topics covered will include types and parts of floats, taxi procedures, amphibious operations, float plane safety, docking and beaching, float plane performance, seaplane and maritime rules, Minnesota float plane rules, takeoff and landing techniques, risk management, and flight planning for float flying. This seminar will be a great start for any pilot who wishes to obtain a sea plane rating. Many of the topics covered will be what an examiner is likely to ask about on a seaplane checkride. In addition, the topics presented will be a great review for current floatplane pilots.
We will have individuals available to help pilots register for FAASafety, so you may participate in the WINGS program. Come see how participating in the WINGS program can make it easier for you to remain flight current without worrying about the pressure of a flight review.

While this course is intended for those who are interested in obtaining their seaplane rating, the instructors assure us that it will be a great way to clean up some rust for those who have ratings but wish to review float plane operations.

These instructors are a bunch of characters...

We are pleased to announce that Andy Brown will be presenting "GA Over Big Water: A MNPA Member's Tale of Crossing the Atlantic" on Friday afternoon, May 20, at the 2022 Great MN Aviation Gathering!

The idea of crossing an ocean in a piston GA airplane can be daunting. Still, many pilots have pulled out maps or popped a flight plan into their EFB and wondered at the possibility of doing such a trip. This session is a Pilot's tale of how a MNPA member used his dream to overcome a challenging period of loss and achieve the greatest flying adventure of his life. In addition to the details of planning and training for such a trip, this story will be told against the backdrop of the incredible places, characters, risks, challenges, and rewards of crossing an ocean.

Andy Brown learned to fly in his Dad’s 1948 Luscombe 8A when he was fourteen. He is now restoring the same plane nearly forty years later. An entrepreneur and businessman, Andy has founded and led engineering and technology companies that have grown to be industry leaders acquired by large public companies. He has contributed on multiple boards of directors and is focused on achieving strategic objectives and outcomes. Andy has integrated his love of flying with both business and recreation interests, using his planes at the airports across Minnesota, throughout the United States, in Canada, and abroad. In 2019, he flew his Cessna 340A across the Atlantic, recreating the WWII military “Crimson Route” through Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and Scotland. In addition to his Twin Cessna and Luscombe restoration, Andy owns a DHC-2 de Havilland Beaver on amphibious floats and skis, and an A1-C Aviat Husky on amphibious floats, skis, and tundra tires. Andy holds both FAA and Transport Canada MEI, SEL, and SES privileges, has hangars at Anoka and Cook, MN airports, as well as a seaplane outpost in Ontario. He monitors border issues for GA closely and is highly proficient with cross-border flying. Andy and his wife live in Deephaven and at Lake Vermillion, MN. Andy was elected to the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Pilots Association and is graciously serving as Treasurer. He is leading a Strategic Planning Committee for our organization.

Please watch our website, www.mnpilots.org, for the schedule of events for the 2022 GMAG, as the schedule may change.

Thanks!

Folks, the hotels in town are sold out, so there are a couple of options: 1. drive in and stay at an area hotel (several within a 30 minute drive); 2. camp out.

Regarding hotels in the area, please check out www.mnpilots.org/gmag and you will see a listing of said hotels.

Regarding camping, the local EAA Chapter 878 has a strong presence at the Maple Lake airport (KMGC), and they are looking into ways of transporting people from there to KCFE, should the weather not allow flying over. We are working with the City of Buffalo to gain permission to camp out under our wings at the Buffalo airport (KCFE).

Nav Chart KCFE.JPG

We are hoping that this cold weather abates soon, for many reasons, not the least of which it would make it more appealing to camp out!

Stay tuned for updates!

Randy

Joel "Henny" Jungemann, Chief Pilot for the Superior National Forest Seaplane Base in Ely, Minnesota, has graciously agreed to speak at the 2022 Great MN Aviation Gathering on the topic of “US Forest Service Beaver Program”. This base is home of one the most unique and oldest aviation programs in the U.S. Forest Service. Henny will provide an overview of the program to include history, aircraft, manning, current operations utilizing the current fleet of 3 de Havilland Beavers, and what the future holds.
Joel Jungemann.jpg

Henny Jungemann served 26 years as a Naval Aviator flying the EA-6B Prowler and F/A-18 Hornet off of almost every U.S. aircraft carrier in service. Highlights of his career include graduating from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School and serving two years as an experimental test pilot, logging over 1,000 carrier arrested landings, commanding the only forward-deployed EA-6B squadron, and successfully ejecting from an EA-6B following catastrophic engine failure. He spent 5 ½ years in Alaska flying his personal Super Cub on floats, wheels and skis, and flew Part 135 206’s and Beavers on floats for Rust’s Flying service in Anchorage for a summer and then two full years flying Beavers on floats for Andrew Airways in Kodiak. As the lead pilot and supervisor for the U.S. Forest Service Beaver Program in Ely, MN, Henny leads a team of two other pilots, an A&P/IA mechanic, and a facilities manager in supporting fire, SAR, MedEvac, wildlife survey and numerous other natural resource missions.

He and his wife Jennifer and their dog Uly enjoy flying their Cessna 185 exploring northern Minnesota and northwest Ontario. Henny holds ATP, CFI/CFII/MEI, Commercial SES and MES, and A&P ratings.

Yes, this is none other than Henny, of Supercub.org fame. He is an awesome speaker and a great person and has a terrific wife, Jen! Hope to see you at the GMAG!

While it is a truism that we enjoy the smell of jet fuel in the morning, we will have a distinct lack of jets at the 2022 GMAG. We WILL have a distinct abundance of spots for you to camp under the wing of your airplane, with first dibs on the breakfasts that will be offered by the great folks at EAA Chapter 878!

IMG_3914.jpg

Imagine this...you fly into KCFE Thursday evening, breathless with anticipation for the opening of the 2022 Great MN Aviation Gathering, which begins Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. Friday, May 20. An even bigger breakfast Saturday, May 21. No starving campers or aviation enthusiasts at OUR GMAG! We care about your nutritional status, friends! You don't need to bring food!

Campfire? Not by your airplane, for crying out loud! We are planning to have a campfire in a safe place near the Hangar Flying hangars, and invite you to join your flying friends while you tell aviation lies and tall tales. Guaranteed to be a great time!

Checklist for flyin campers at the GMAG in no particular order!:

1. Tent. Good heavens, don't forget a tent in case it rains. Plus, if you bring your tent it almost guarantees blue skies and no rain!
2. Sleeping bag. Coming solo, bring that sleeping bag. Coming with your favorite co-pilot? Zip those bags together, and enjoy a romantic night in beautiful Buffalo!
3. Bug spray. Last year we heard of a pilot who camped out and was carried flown away by a flock of mosquitoes. Seriously. No flight plan. Still missing... Bug spray is the Cologne of Minnesota...
4. Ear plugs. The sound of snoring aviators has been known to drive sane people crazy. Word for the Wise: Bring ear plugs.
5. Rain gear. What would Minnesota be without the occasional afternoon rain showers?

Questions? Planning on camping? Please contact president@mnpilots.org if you have questions.

Just to confirm, plane-side camping is approved at KCFE for this event? Good grass for landing?

For those of you who are wise beyond your years, and are planning to take in the first day of the GMAG on Friday, May 20, we have just learned that Norm's Wayside Bar and Grill have extended an invitation to dine and socialize in their outdoor patio area immediately following the GMAG.

Norm's is legendary. An experience. Awesome pizza. Politics runs deep here. Be prepared.

Seating is limited to 50 people, so please stop by the registration area at the GMAG and let them know by 2:00 p.m. if you plan to attend, and what kind of pizza you prefer.

Be there or be square!
