Where did you fly today?

Unusual warm weather today. Flew over the Owyhee's to the reservoir and picked out a sandbar.

Between my helpers getting sick with RSV and then Covid, weather, work in the shop and working with FAA and Sensenich on this prop STC I have not had any time. Hopefully soon.

My Gal and I got out to play in the snow and enjoy the first warm weather of the year and checked the conditions on a few local lakes.

The last one with the visor reflection should be a framed 3x5 Foot wall art piece.

Finally got out on skis after a frustrating couple months. Put my skis on back in early January, then rain and wind ruined the snow. Took a month to build up a good snowpack again, didn't have a ton of time due to work and short daylight hours, then rain and wind ruined the snowpack again. Didn't have high hopes of finding good snow today, but was pleasantly surprised!

Weather finally broke after a week of cold, rain, sleet and snow. Was an awesome day of flying finished up with a trip into one of my favorites, the Beaver Bar. Gets my attention on the approach. Got it's name from years ago when there was a lot of beaver activity.

Learn something new every day. Never knew beavers were that far south. We are talking 4 legged ones?

Glenn
Yep, the first few times I landed there I noticed strange tracks and drag marks and finally figured out beavers were cutting down little trees and dragging them into the river.

Dropped in at Chicken Strip on 1 March. I also stopped by at Furnace Creek and Stovepipe Wells. The Stovepipe Wells pavement appears to be in much better shape than Furnace Creek. Chicken Strip.jpg

Drove past our strip yesterday morning, the view was out of a postcard. I couldn't resist,, had an amazing couple hours playing in the snow on the river and enjoying the warm weather. The last pic, is looking down the strip from the other end as the sun set on an epic day.

Flew up to a Lodge to do a favor for a friend, wanted to lay some tracks today since it was too cold to mess around too long on the ground. The snowmachiners found the strip and sure carved it up. Drug spot out on the river, will try that next trip.

Perfect day to watch the birds fly by:

We lost "The Shepherd" yesterday after a long illness. Jerry Engelbrecht is a Minnesota aviation legend having solo'd the family J-3 at the farm at age 9. He was an aerial wolf hunter with his dad Art for many years (in the same PA-18-125 Cub the family had owned since 1960), served in Vietnam with the 7th Cavalry flying Cobra's and finished his career as Chief Pilot of the MN DNR. He was the best of the best. Blue skies and tailwinds Jerry, May God take you to Himself. You are missed.

The temps warmed up a bit, but the flight out to the lake was still -5 degrees, the lake was drifted pretty bad, but found a spot near shore smooth enough. Saw a large pack of wolves as I was landing and was able to get a photo of 4 of them,, there was about 7 or 8 in the pack. The Pike were hungry and it took me longer to clean them, than it did to catch them. Nice to have fresh fresh fish after a long winter. Simply amazing to enjoy a day on the ice sucking up sunshine. The lake ice was only about 2 feet thick,, was over 5 feet last year, we have had very cold temps, but record snow, looks like the snow has insulated the ice. I don't expect a long season this year.

If that's E Twin there's typically been at least two major wolf packs that roam the area. One would come up from the Toklat River/Kantishna drainage and circle the lakes to the west looking for moose in the isolated cottonwood/spruce parks. Another ran a circle line from Lakes Wien-Becky-West Twin-East Twin-John Hansen-Mucha and back to Wien. They preferred the weeks before and after a full moon, but would lay low during wind spells. Never saw much for a pack towards Manley or the Zitziana River but after the 2002 and two later fires that country opened up for them. Nice pike!

Flew a couple minutes from the airport to the neighbors field across the road from the library. The library is where the old timers gather every evening to solve the world’s problems and have a couple adult beverages. They came over to inspect the cub and get a couple pictures.

First really warm day here yesterday, my Buddy and I, who flies a KitFox, flew out together and did some Pike fishing. Was a busy day, as everyone was out enjoying the warm weather and calm winds. Not often that my Cub is the "fast" plane. :)
