Where did you fly today?

…...That BadLandsTraveler with it's 172 wing is an interesting airplane …..

I watched a video about that Badlands Traveler a while back.
Awesome performance.
I believe it had 150 wings then, but I recall the owner talking about either building another one with 172 wings.
Or upgrading the original.
Like to hear more about the Traveler-- maybe you can get the owner to post some info about it.

Perfect Sunday morning, no wind but ceilings and visibility was garbage to the north and east so no one to fly with but my dogs. Now that the river has gone down it has revealed some new land spots.

I don’t frequent supercub.org so much these days, so I didn’t see that there was some inquiries about my contraptions.
Doug Jackson now has the one with the 172 wings and the 0360.
It came out at 1085 empty with 31” Bushwheels.
Performance was sort of a mixed bag.
I felt like it definitely did better all around at my elevation (3100) as compared to the last 2 that I built with the 150 wings.
The 150 wings definitely make for a much lighter (930 empty) and snappier plane, even though they aren’t as stable at low speed, and certainly don’t perform as well with a big load.
I guess it’s like everything in life; define your mission.
Im planning to start another plane early 2020 with hopes to bring it to Oshkosh.
150 wings and a 340. Time will tell. Clint

I've been bogged down for months with my day job. Finally had a moment to flex some rental wings local to Lewiston Idaho.

Still in flight school, did a cross country today. Superior to Brainerd to Mora and back to Superior. (KSUW-KBRD-KJMR_KSUW) Once you got on top of the inversion it was like butter, super smooth air. But about a 40kn headwind to Brainerd. Got a 160kn ground speed in a 172 from Mora to Superior though!

I agree, Clint. I was excited to see your recent post regarding the Badlands Traveler, which meant you were still out there and "in circulation". Let's meet in the middle someday!20190113_092436.jpg

It was not today, was yesterday... But it was fun flying, filming and editing.

Hope you enjoy

Between 2 depressions:

I have a C170 with avcon 180 in it. Flew from home road to Swift Current to fuel up. Then north in a 60 mile loop along the S Sask. river.Pumped skis down and landed on a lake right beside the town of Morse. I walked in to town for mail and a cup of coffee. Town has 225 residents so I probably said hello to 10% of the population. Remembered to buy a bag of horse oats at co-op and carried them to plane. Took off---wow are those drifts hard-- both coming and going. Then I did a check out of a few neighbours yards and went home. I found a fairly soft and level stretch of snow beside one of my hedgerows and greased on. Taxied to road; pumped skis up and drove down the road to my yard and hanger. Bright sun , light breeze and just freezing, a great day.

Only my third time on skis and the first time this winter, so I have a lot yet to learn. But damn, ski flying sure is fun! Got a little chilly on the ground - hit -25F at the last place I landed, so I didn't stick around long. What a beautiful day!

Beautiful scenery BrianM and nice plane (Eh, MTV?). One suggestion is try to stop in a run you laid down before while testing the snow. Sometimes if you stop at the end of a run getting going can be tough. The prop tip eats snow which reduces thrust and the skis can't lift the plane up especially with a belly pod for drag. What skis are you using? Hey have fun but try not to get stuck.

Gary

I’m using Aero 2000 skis.

Yeah, I realized that stopping in untracked snow was a rookie mistake. I did check the snow before committing to landing, but didn’t think through where I’d stop. Didn’t think about the prop eating snow - thanks for the tip - but certainly noticed that it took some time to get moving. Still learning for sure, so certainly appreciate the feedback.

Brian you'll have some real fun with that nice plane. As we move into Spring and daily melt from sun and warmth starts then refreezes, the top of the snow get more crusted. That hard crust can damage the prop tip and eventually change the pitch. You can hear a hollow sound when the tip's buried into the snow. If you raise the tail too soon it'll drop the tip in even more. The belly pod and tail wheel if lowered a little some should cut a groove for the prop tip in deep snow, so that's why a couple of practice passes before settling in can help. Keep the great pictures coming!
