Flying over the San Joaquin valley Ca. this weekend and saw this (image attached)
Not the first time I’ve seen this, what’s going on?
For scale, each rectangle is 1 mi x1/2 mi
with the price of diesel thats got to be an expensive joy ride!
Kind of looks like what we had to do with fallow fields in ND when things got dry and the wind blew. Drag a cultivator around to stop wind blown soil erosion, and maybe hit a weed patch or two while out there.
Looks pretty simple to me. Farmer is out chasing weeds with cultivator. No point in guessing how much chemical you might need and over- or under-filling the sprayer.
About 25 years ago a friend stopped by my shop with a picture he had taken over the mid-west farm fields on the way back from Oshkosh in his J-3. It was a a big field with an expertly plowed "FARMING SUCKS" in block letters. He though about landing and asking but figured he might be ratting out a kid to the old man.
I took a lady friend up whose father farmed several thousand acres, all pivot irrigated. We got up a couple thousand feet, and at one point she exclaimed " look at all those big circles..., what could they be?" True story, she was about 40 then, and blonde.
Mapping elevation for drain tile? Or the guys grand son learning how to drive a tractor. I remember sitting on my dads lap and doing something similar. When I got close to something dad would aim the tractor in a different direction.
Hey! It is California cereal country! The land of fruits, flakes, and nuts all mixed up! Anything can happen, no reason is needed, and it means absolutely nothing!
