Youngest member of one of our family Chukar hunting trips in Hells Canyon, fewer birds this year but more than enough fun especially with him with us!

I think i know where your birds went........this showed up in a friends back yard in northern Maine. Took us a week to figure out what it was. Seems a few of them have found their way north as there's been several sighted. I read that they will not survive the cold winters of the northeast.

I had a piebald living on my property for several years. Awesome experience to be able to have been able to see it nearly everyday. That was until a worthless SOB (neighbor) shot it in the spine! It was mid May and I had gone away for the day only to come home and saw it laying out in the field kicking and trying to get up. I went out to see what was wrong and saw that it had been shot in the spine. Back was broken and it had literally been kicking so hard the hide was worn through to its flesh. Sad....I called the warden, shot it in the head and butchered it, only to find two fawns not yet born. Warden was given the bullet that I recovered from the spine. We knew who had done it but nothing was ever done. I have a big hatred towards these scum that do this.

Riverking,
Stand by...I have a good feeling you might get an update on ND pheasants by another SC member here very shortly. :)

Those are undoubtedly pen reared birds that someone released to train dogs or for hunting. Chukars aren't native to North America in any case. But, Chukars are one of the favorite pen reared birds for dog training.

Chukars can tolerate some very cold temperatures....the part of the world they come from originally is mighty cold in winter. I've known them to overwinter in Fairbanks, AK if they have lots of food and some shelter. They don't tolerate moist cold well, though.

North Dakota birds down 30-40% in my estimate. The poor chick production resulted from hail and dry weather at critical times. More birds this year were older and wiser and any poor decision making on our part resulted in no shots. Great people out there in ND. I'm very grateful to rural folks with similar views on many things. Ended 4 days short of limits and passed on Hungarian and Sharptail since I see fewer every trip. The old guy and young Toby did great.

My wife with her 2016 cow elk. As a friend from Alberta says: "The best meat on the planet". And I'd agree. I'd spotted about 6 elk the evening before and suspected they'd go down to the river that evening for a drink. We found them coming back up just after daylight. One shot at 250 yards through the heart. She won't shoot unless she's sure of the shot. This morning she passed up a nice whitetail buck in the trees because she just wasn't positive she'd kill it with one shot. All that showed was half of the buck's neck and head at 200 yards. We'll find another I told her.

I hear the goats are doing really well on Kodiak these days......amazing critters, and one of the relatively positive transplant stories.....

MTV

They sure are Mike. This place is lousy with both goats and deer...

Our son son had a good elk hunt too. He used a .300 Win Mag to shoot this bull he rough scored in the 340s.

I've been down in Indiana taking care of aged parents on the farm, so haven't had much chance for hunting this fall. I did make a quick trip to Dillingham earlier this fall and was able to get out one day for some spruce grouse hunting.
IMG_1839.jpg
Harvested a lot of peaches, plums and apples this summer. Something I haven't done for 40 years.
IMG_1734.jpg

These characters have been hanging around the farm all summer, eating apples and alfalfa, so Dad (age 95) is fired up for deer hunting again with his muzzle loader.

Warm MN deer season thus far. Despite almost record temps the bucks were moving and all business with the does. Huge moon phase right now but still seeing bucks in the day. I watched a trophy tall tiner at 300 yards for 30 minutes breed his girlfriend. I didn't want to shoot that far with a .358 and was rewarded with something few get to see. He mounted her 4 times and I was glad to have binoculars which I seldom carry. Tessy got a beautiful one today. Neighbor also scored a dandy. I harvested a nice large bodied eater and am happy to sometimes give back a little and let the larger ones live. We have passed some marginal shots on good bucks that would be irresponsible. Winter storm knocking this Friday. The pressure is off and that also includes election night LOL!

Thanks for doing that Eric!! You know I am not the computer guru that can post pictures easily.

A measured 185 yards with my trusty old '06!!

Simmons...LMAO!!! I learned many years ago that good glass will always top all my rifles.

Got two last night. One sow at 30 yards and this one at 135. Aimpoint red dot no magnification. Pitch black out with a PVS 14 night vision. Awesome stuff!
