Happy to report that hunting season has officially started for 2019 - at least for me. Wanted to get the thread started and share a story.

2019_Elk.jpg

Was fortunate enough to take this 5x5 in New Mexico on Wednesday - all solo, even the selfie. This bull was a satellite to a much bigger herd bull, which I got to see when I was making my 4th pack trip out the next morning. The bull I shot had cut a cow out from the herd and was trailer her, when he passed 20 yards from me. Got him to stop with a cow call and made a clean pass through lung shot. Stopped him again after the shot with some cow calling, he stood for 20 or 30 seconds, which gave me the opportunity to confirm the shot placement. I then waited the eternity of 30 minutes before trailing. Found him 250 yards from where he was shot. Animal recovered - SUCCESS!

Reality sets in about now, realizing its about 1 1/2 miles to the closest road. I know that's not far, by Alaska standards, but needless to say there was lots of work involved in getting this guy processed, on my back, and in the freezer - again all solo. Really was a rewarding experience, even after 30+ years of hunting. For those of you with some experience in the area, would like to hear about what game bags you are using.

Somewhat aviation related:
Wife: "Can you get the 4 Wheeler to him?"
Me: "Nope, maybe a helicopter"
Wife: "Ha ha. Is this an excuse to own one?"

That looks like a green light to me:lol:

Looking forward to hearing some of the hunting stories from others on the forum this year.

Fantastic! I’m in the airport in Anchorage right now, heading to Idaho for my first elk hunt. Also my first bowhunt in years. To say I’m excited would be an understatement, and this certainly adds to it! Well done, sir!

Brian,

Hopefully the elk in Idaho are deep in the rut and doing lots of bugling. More eyes in the forest, but sure makes for a more exciting hunt.
Best of Luck to you, and hope to see a picture from the hunt.

Awesome post and congrats with harvesting it with a bow! My first and biggest Elk was taken with a bow. Called him at and scewered him at 12 yards. Major adrenaline rush! I was 6+ miles up the mountians of SW colorado on a do it yourself pack in hunt. Animal down....the work began!!

From the reports from my friend in Idaho, it sounds like I’m hitting the timing just about right for the rut. I’ve never been around rutting elk - heck, have only seen elk once on Afognak Island. Even if we’re not successful, I’m just crazy excited about the experience!

No elk or sheep for Toby and I, so we'll have to eat grouse. Not complaining but ready for heat and humidity to go away.

Went into the grouse woods for the first time this season today. Schatten, my "Dead dog walking" because he has leukemia and limited life expectancy, found & pointed this bird in a tree drying out from the heavy morning dew. My other 2 GSPs were also pointing, but they were looking at the ground. The wise old dog was looking into the tree so I knew where to expect the flush to come from. When it flushed I did manage to make the shot and the bird flew into the afterlife!

Happy and WET dog with is bird.

Glad I'll get another season with him and the younger dogs together. And will be happy to enjoy some bacon wrapped grouse breast appetizer this evening with dinner!

Update to original post -

And the next day he hunted some woodcock with me. He found and pointed over 10 of them. It was REAL thick stuff. I could see 3 and they came home with us for another dinner.

I miss archery Idaho, beautiful time of year to be in the woods.
Was fortunate to take this guy, Ca costal blacktail,
last weekend of rifle season.

SD,
Thanks for the kind words and congratulations on your elk!
Most of my hunts are solo so I can appreciate the effort and gratification you experienced, thanks for sharing.
Re game bags. I’ve been using “Alaska game bags” product, (product # DCS448 ) one pack contains 4 quarter size bags.
stretchy, bug proof, lightweight. And a good dedicated pack frame for hauling loads is invaluable.
usually 4 loads per elk. Never hunt downhill ;-)

Spent the evening processing my little buck, a gratifying way to wrap up a successful hunt.
Dedicated 20 lbs of trimmings to a batch of “German” sausage.

ND Pheasant report down again from fall 2018. Some areas totally void of birds when in good years they are hunter destinations. Some massive summer hail, bad winter conditions, and early fall blizzard a week ago hasn't helped wildlife. Almost no crop is out due to wet conditions which means massive tracts of crop high in moisture. Then the wind blew. Birds are there; we did OK; but also walked a dozen miles a day. The old guy at 88 could be found napping in the sunflowers when we let him.

Eric,

Wishing you luck. Primitive Firearms season opens this Saturday in Oklahoma. Packing up tonight to head over to my place tomorrow with a good friend of mine. Weather has changed here, so hopefully the big boys get up out of their beds and are on the move. Opening day is nearly as exciting today as it was 40 years ago, when I first started hunting as a teenager. Wish we had the massive whitetails that you do in Minnesota - but I am able to get a few of the Kansas bucks to cross the line over onto my place. Look forward to seeing a picture or two of what you harvest.

The first few days of elk season were good for us this year.

IMG_7050.jpg

My wife with her 2019 cow elk killed with 1 shot at 270 yards with her favorite custom 7mm-08 and 160 Accubond.

IMG_E7031.jpg

And me with a busted up general-tag raghorn I killed on opening day in a snow storm at 243 yards with a new custom .308 built on a Ruger American. I used a 165 grain Accubond, 1-shot for me too.

I'm happiest when I eat elk 3 meals a day!

Very nice Spinner. Currently in Dickinson on my way to Montana to break in a new Browning Hells Canyon Speed in 300 Win Mag. Hope to have your success. Stay tuned.

I once again ruined my ski season fitness program by getting this nice juicy cow elk on opening day, 70 packages and 40# of grind for those long cold winter night dinners. 120 yards, 180 gr. Barnes pure copper to eliminate collateral damage to birds.
