Thinking of The Dark Side, C182

I have always thought that the C182 is the best all-around airplane out there. Also I think has the best safety record of any single. That is because it is so easy to fly, yet has the power to get you out of trouble.

It is also boring as can be to fly. Get one with an autopilot and you can leave your brain at home. That was the reason I went to a 180 years ago, most of the advantages, but landings will keep you humble. I know the 180/185 is bringing ridiculous money these days, but after the cub flying you've done, the 182 will be a snoozer.

Hard to beat an O-470U for a Continental. Stock in about '77 on.

John

One of the claimed reasons a friend sold his, was because his wife absolutely could not stay awake in it! The same plane had about $8,000.00 worth of damage once, by horses chewing on it, while parked at the Big Southern Butte airstrip.

My first owned plane was a '58 182 with a Robertson STOL kit. Bought at age 40 with a partner. It had oversize tires and was a wonderful backcountry plane. Flew it to many Idaho back country strips for weekend campouts with the wife. Partner owned a ranch in the Chilcotin area of central BC which we flew to many times. He dinged the prop on a landing at his BC ranch once and announced we were going to buy a 185. No way I could afford to be in a 185 but he made it happen. My first tailwheel experience was in that 185. Not the best plane to learn tailwheel. Flew that plane for 26 years, almost every year to AK and BC. The '58 182 was an awesome airplane!!

I have a '59 that has been STOL modified with a Sportsman leading edge cuff, vg's, and 8.50s all around with an airglas 206 nose fork. It is reasonably fun to fly but gets slowed down by all the mods (125 mph IAS, trues out at about 140 mph at ~ 6000 ft).

My main advice would be to run a w&b on your particular airplane before buying. Our CG is very far forward (battery moved to firewall) which can make flying with very much fuel a problem. Probably common sense, but I didn't do it before I bought mine and regret overlooking that. Also the older ones like mine have a low gross (1750 empty, 2650 max).

77 model with new 252 hp engine conversion and way too much glass stuff!!
Acting as safety pilot for ifr practice.

Only problem with a 182 is nobody ever ooh's and ah's over them when you pull up to the pump.

I think you might be mistaken...

I pity the pilot that has to keep all that aluminum polished. Sharp lookin plane though!

I studied, considered, and priced Todd Peterson / Peterson Performance’s IO-550 King Katmai conversion - my recollection is the canard system added about $25,000 in 2016, and I was more interested in SPEED than STOL at that time

My answer to adding whatever STOL Capabilities I might ever need was to add VGs, which DO make a difference

Steve , if you decide to cross Southern Missouri sometime contact me. I have a '59 B model and you are welcome to fly it to help you decide. Wonderful plane !

I have a 61 D model that I inhereted, I've been debating on bringing it home to Alaska or just leaving it in Oregon for the rest of the family.
I guess I'm strange....I like the C and D model.

I really like the wide body. Makes all the difference in the world for comfort. No need to stagger the seats or put your arm around the other person. Just my opinion. Sure wish they had done that with the 180/185.

Bill

In our local morning hanger BS session we got to talking about the p&q gross weight increase which is just a piece of paper.
The question came up what FAR prohibits one from operating over gross weight.

There is a guy with the STC to up the gross....apparently he just went through the parts manual and proved they were the same....

Here's an intriguing project in Fairbanks, AK. On Facebook Marketplace.

Well, I know I have been pretty quiet on this thread which is usually pretty rare for me. ;) I have to admit I went down lots of rabbit holes on this one. Had lots of people sending me stuff and realized real fast I could get out of my budget really fast if I let my emotions get the best of me. I found a late 50s model that looked great in the pictures. Lots of previous damage history from when it was new up until 40 years ago. That stuff doesn't always scare me till I read more resent log book entries about replacing loose rivets in several different logbook entries plus I felt like it was way over priced. Cathy and I had finally made the decision to do some work on our house rather than buy another airplane until I got a text from a friend about one out his way that might fit the bill. He and another member here had looked at it, taken some pictures and hooked me up with the owner. He has a strip on his ranch in the Texas panhandle and decided it is time to hang up his spurs. I flew out there on Friday to work on a Super Cub and then we went up and checked out this 182A with a Texas Skyways 520 conversion. It is a ranch plane and the exterior and interior kinda match the same motif as my Super Cub but the mechanicals are amazing. I have always been a function over form kind of guy. Besides the upgraded engine and prop it has a carbon fiber Silkirks cowl, recent fuel bladder, and the entire tail was removed, new jack screws, bushings and all new control cables installed. New nose strut, nose wheel, has Cleveland brakes along with a skyBeacon ADS-B unit with KT76A transponder, KX155 Nav/Com with indicator and an EI single cylinder EGT gauge. We flew it and even at 4K ft field elevation it jumped off the ground and climbed like a home sick angel. The owner claims 160 mph, I saw 145 kts on 600x6 tires with wheel pants on the mains. The asking price was more than fair, never advertised and I bought it. Since I was in my Super Cub and the money got wired at 3 pm and won't be there till Monday I have to go back this next week and pick it up.

They say when in Rome do as the Romans do, luckily Kevin showed me the way and we had a blast in the Palo Duro Canyon Saturday morning. After flying home I have spent last night and today going over logs, receipts and every scrap of paper saved in the two big satchels of paperwork. So far I am pretty happy. Can't wait to bring it home and start on the short list, BAS harnesses and some sort of engine monitor to see what is going on with that 200 hr engine. Thanks to everyone for the advice, and comments here and the many texts and emails. I greatly appreciate all the help and have learned a lot already. I am sure that will continue.

Not even. That is my sanity device. The 182 will be Cathy's magic carpet. I have no issue crossing the country at 90 mph and 50 ft.

The wife always gets the blame...

BTW, now you can come on the Sunday night chats and talk about 182s..... :)

You weren't looking in the rear view mirror and seeing the look on her face on the way home from Arkansas getting beat up at 70 mph. She won't do like Laura and fly from the front so I can sleep. ;) I will admit the speed will be nice but then I miss out on playing once I get there.

Congrats, Steve. They are great planes and it sounds like you got a really nice one.

Assuming that is the carb'd 520 from TX Skyways, mind the carb ice. I had that engine in my C180, once got carb ice at full power over San Antonio (at 12,500 or something).
