Cessna 170/140 winter block off kit question

This is on a 1954 170B. Not a great picture but you can see where I cut the plate and then made an air scoop to direct the air through the heater intake. This works good, after the plane picks up speed. Plenty of cabin heat down to 0, at 20 probably only open it half.

    Wolves Kill Man in Saskatchewan

I read the article and it was mainly about the decline in the numbers of hunters. The best photo was from behind the guy holding a wolf at bay with a stick, only a few feet away. I gave the magazine to a relative so I don't have the pictures here any more. I think the best comment in the...

    Kase's picture "The Harvest"

We run Gleaner combines and are real happy with performance and dealer support. Doesn't matter what color machine you have, it won't make you money if you don't operate it right. Ten years ago combines were still made from steel. When there was a fire it was usually small, put out with a...

    North Dakota flying question

Bill, Newtown has an airport and so does Parshall. For whatever reason Parshall gets more fedral $ than Newtown and may be a nicer airport. Parshall has a new fuelmaster set up which may be convenient for you. I don't know about hangar space. From Parshall or Newtown fly west over the...

Future for crop dusters is up in the air

Here in central North Dakota there is still a demand for spray planes. Most years there are not enough in the area. As long as there are sunflowers and bugs, we will have a demand for planes. When we need to kill bugs, you can't beat a plane and a good pilot. :D Bill

    Runway grass...

In North Dakota we use Fairway Crested Wheat Grass. This is recommended by our Ag dept and the golf courses because it is a sodding grass and not a clumping grass. A sodding grass will do just that, sod, which can be nice and smooth. It also heals itself if you happen to lay on the breaks...

    Small planes in the future?

Why don't we have you practical minded real world experience people at the top of the FAA totem pole? We should take pilots and mechanics with 20 plus years of experience and put them directly into upper management. If we did, I believe that general aviation would be safe and growing.

    Small planes in the future?

All FAA inspectors should be required to have a private pilots certificate. Problem is, most of us have real jobs and can't stand the beef waste long enough to stay in one of those jobs and make a difference. The system we have is the equivalent of state highway patrolman who don't drive...

    Preheating on a budget

My budget pre heater for my C170B is a $40 1500w space heater, $10 stool and $20 blanket. Very portable but does need electricity. http://www.popularaviation.com/PhotoGallery/4522.JPG Bill :D

    26" Goodyears on a C-170

Jon, Yes there are several 170s wearing 26" tires. I think that an STC comes with Bushwheels, but definitely not the Goodyears. A copy of a 337 exists at http://www.cessna170.org/ Do a search for tires. Several threads exist talking about big tires for 170s. You will need to become a...

Unmanned drones to patrol Montana-Canada border?

Mark, No doubt some or most of those nosy neighbors are packing side arms on their belts and/or rifles in the pickups. Uncle Sam could give them a little authority and that would be the safest border in the country. Maybe it already is. Bill

    Anyone know any details

Bill Beeks was a good friend to all of us area pilots. With his 50 years of flying time he was a good teacher, CFI, mentor and mechanic. This was his life. He was also a pillar in the Washburn community and there is a big hole left here right now. I still can't believe he is gone...

    Combining Wheat in Montana

How is the crop in SE MT? Friends coming home from the harvest run say that most everything down south was real bad. South Dakota Combines didn't even come out of the shed. We combined peas last week that went 31 to 35 bu/ac, about half a crop for us, but we have something to harvest. Durum...

Does an Engineer need a Helicopter Air Speed IND.

While getting my tail wheel endorsement, the only time my CFI raised his voice at me was when I looked at the airspeed indicator on or close to the ground. During one take off he told me that if you look at that thing again I'll cover it up. Ground loops happen on or close to the ground and we...

    wind in Montana and Dakotas

    wind in Montana and Dakotas

This spring we have had more 30mph winds than average. The wind blows for a week straight sometimes with gusts to 40 plus. It can take the fun out of everything. On the positive side, we have had very few bugs to mess up the plane. The mosquitos must have a relatively low demonstrated cross...

    Field Approvals, (Again)

Too bad we can't move some of the better FAA field guys up the totem pole to a position where they can fix rules and regulations. People who are actually pilots first and lawyers last. I guess they don't want to be stuck in an office full of bull pies. Bill

    Crappy subject

Lime with gin or tequila. :drinking: And there are much better places to pour this blend than down the outhouse hole. Sip it around a camp fire and when you go to the outhouse, the smell won't matter. Bill
