Thumbs up to every post in this thread. Several Labrador's were indispensable when I was raising Bobby and Brittany. Travel now precludes having one. But it takes me back in a second to read the posts.
No, Mot, here is the engine before it left a while ago for San Luis Obispo, California, for a disassembly and a courtesy look-see by Kevin Eldredge of Ace Performance. So what you saw must have been an impostor! The engine will be shipped back, installed in the plane and flying again soon!
It started a standard split nosebowl. Dan and I were together in Maine and had driven down and picked up some West System epoxy and some carbon fiber cloth from the local marine store in Portland for the airbox. That was already built. One morning Dan used the same materials, and laid up the...
Steve,
Sure; I definitely enjoyed our conversation.
Well Dan Dufault built this plane for us, and we weren't even in the same state, so calling it Amateur Built is stretching it... it doesn't even apply. The Designated Examiner suggested we register it Experimental Exhibition. It was going to...
tempdoug,
It works great. Air goes straight in and down. It was the single thing that most lowered CHT's when we were working out details during our first 40 hours in Maine. Its the most direct path for airflow to get inside the Cowl/Plenum, and with one turn the air then goes down through the...
Josh,
First, Definitely not keeping cylinders cool with liquid. EGT's are leaned to between peak and best power - but never richer than that when I fly it, and I stay below my 400 CHT maximum. Yesterday was running around 370 on 1, 2, and 4. 3 is my warmer one by 10 or do degrees.
In cruise...
Guys, I was out in the hills, camping and flying for a few days enjoying a great high pressure system in place - not a puff of wind yesterday from sea level up to high altitude LZ's! I took the Glacier Cub, so glad I did because it performs so well maneuvering into complex three dimensional...
Yes, REALLY. BACK OFF Ricky Bobby.
Chicken Cub,
I think this is more fun in the Experimental world. I have also been asked by guys who fly for hire if it would be certified so they could use it and not be stuck with the old technology. Maybe, if an Investor thought it was a profitably viable...
Sure, Steve. It's the R-409, Which is also IO of course. Also with the real sweet EFII. It will idle down as low as 250 rpm with just the lightweight Catto Prop as flywheel mass. Very smooth at all RPM's with the lightweight reciprocating parts.
No problems, Sweet Motor, the IO-409. Runs smooth and strong. Since we are running the highest time R series Engine in service, Kevin Eldredge offered to provide a Courtesy Inspection at our convenience. That's great customer service and makes sense to me. Kevin is building and selling R series...
John Scott,
Thanks! Quick answer is that this gear is somewhat heavier, and there are a lot of structural changes in the fuselage structure to handle the new structural loadings related to the gear - we worked to have safety with multiple G loading on both a single wheel and also on both...
tempdoug and Gerald,
Ii will get pics to you once I get a chance in a few days. Jon has the Glacier Cub as just returned from the Wrangell's where he went with Steve and Rob Baldwin to pray, grieve and then retrieve Jay's Cub.
Gerald, We shaped a mould out of foam and formed the airbox over...
Whoever you are, no offense intended. Most people on this forum have Cubs. This thread is about the building of a new Cub, and an effort to share the technology advances to help others. The photographs of the airplane in various settings is to show how this technology allows us to land in a...
Ted,
That is one serious walk in the park! Glad those seracs stayed where they were. How many days was your climb? I'm sure there is a lot to think about on a mission like that!
Here is another ridge that Bobby landed. The light was getting kind of low; it was about 11:00 pm one night.
The...
Ted,
Very interesting; that you have a first Ascent on the East Buttress of McKinley. Would any of that route be visible in either of these photos?
...(or, I could just start striding up it and see if it works...)... :-)
Cool about BC and Alberta too. BC and Alberta have incredible exploration...
Ted,
This photo was taken on the beach in front of my place. More photos of it can be viewed the web address below.
And with all due respect, Sir, I suggest you take your Bright Yellow SQ up here and explore, look around and spend time deeply satisfying yourself with the places you discover...
Quick Update on some "New Cub Wanderings". Not sure what size these photos will turn out. Credit goes to Katharine for taking many of these.
The new gear is working out great! Plane lands super slow and controllable with this wing design and with the gentle suspension in the gear, just drive it...
Thanks Everybody for the kind remarks about the new Glacier Cub. I haven't had a chance to get much on line about the new Cub since December, with all the steps involved to get the plane finished and tuned in Maine, to fly it to Alaska, to coach Bobby and Jon in practice, and to Valdez.
Dan...
