    Getting rid of tail beacon?

Thanks guys. That’s the way I read the FAR’s. Incidentally, I think this individual is an instructor, but that’s another topic.

    Getting rid of tail beacon?

A curious question related to this. As I read the FAR’s, to fly at night, a plane must be equipped with a tail mounted beacon, or appropiate strobes, period. There is a 1953 Cessna 180 nearby, that the owner says is exempt from the regulation on lighting, that is, no beacon. Am I wrong on this...

    It’s 9/11…..where we’re you?

I was over the South China sea at 35,000. We were supposed to check in with company every hour, but no radio contact. ATC was quiet.3 hours of radio silence. Getting close to Singapore, we were cleared to land about 150 miles out. Unusual. Cleared for a straight in, also unusual. At the gate...

Twisted elevator or stabilizer on Super cub? Help!

In response to #25, KJC, I think Atlee probably twisted the part to line up. The fabric showed wrinkles in that area, and no signs of heat.

Twisted elevator or stabilizer on Super cub? Help!

Had the same problem when I built my super cub. New Atlee stabilizers and new Atlee elevators. Unfortunately I figured all new would be the same. They weren’t. Steve told me that should have been checked before cover. I didn’t. Anyway he corrected the problem, with the cover on. I would think...

Those that fly in triple digit heat…

Flew out of Phoenix, Yuma, and El Centro for years. Phoenix is hot, but try El Centro, with the humidity. Time of day didn’t matter. Worst piece of machinery to use there was a Cessna 310. I had about 10 minutes on the ground at places like Deer Valley. Traffic problems, engines hit red line...

    Current O-320 Cylinder Options/Opinions

Call it what you want. It was built by Lycoming, the cylinders are well marked, and the AD is very specific.

    Current O-320 Cylinder Options/Opinions

I ordered a factory reman O-320A2B for my cub. It had about 100 hours on the engine when I got AD 2009-26-12. Basically it says run the cylinders until they need repair, then throw them away. Nice, especially on a factory reman. And Lycoming won’t give any satisfaction on something like this.

And don’t forget the AD note certain Lycoming cylinders have on them.

When did the FAA start requiring annual inspections?

Just going back a short time ago, Dave Hinson was FAA Administrator and he tried to make the inspections biannual or 100 hour. The uproar from fbo’s and AI’s was heard loud and clear at the top. Back to annuals.

    185 vortex generators

I put vg’s on my 185. No regrets. No problem fueling. I felt I had better aileron authority at the low end, especially in the flare. Also put the Bush leading edge cuffs on. I can’t tell you why, but the later model 185’s had a better feel on the low end. I would not make any changes, as the...

    Brakes SuperCub Restrictor valve.

The brake housings can be reversed. Top threads are the same as bottom threads. Just put an ABI housing on my 185 and the bleeder was put on the bottom, hydraulic lines on top. No sense hooking brush or other things. Never saw a restrictor valve on a cub hydraulic line. Pedal travel is like...

Pratt Aviation Services @ Merrill Field?

I used Pratt for an annual on my 185. I used him only because Northern Lights avionics used him to install my autopilot and the plane was there for a quick turn. Took him 3 months and 162 hours for a “clean” airplane to do an annual. I wanted to fly the iditarod that year, but that didn’t...

Opinions on LED Landing Lights, Flashing, TSO, non-TSO, Radio Noise

I use non-certified led’s on my planes. The silly price of certified is unreal. No radio noise, no problems. There are other options for certified, like the salvage yard. A few years ago when I was pricing led’s, I found a supplier that would sell a 4509 size for $5. Minimum order was for 50. I...

    uAvionix ADS-B service bulletin

I put the uavionics unit on the wingtip because of the class B down here in Phoenix. Shortly thereafter a service bulletin came out for an update. I have an iPad. Would not work. Called for help. They said the FAA only uses windows and I had to use a backdoor method to update. Things did not go...

I expect more from pilots. Take your trash home.

Landed at a popular fishing spot last Wednesday. A super cub had parked in the middle of the landing area(a two rut road) and set up his tent in front of the cub. Plenty of off strip areas to camp/park, but some people don’t think. He moved after he was informed, but still infringed on the...

    Mayo Clinic BasicMed Course

When I needed medical care, I tried to go to Mayo. They refused me, not once but several times. They didn’t like my insurance. As I am down in Phoenix for now, it was easy to get what I needed. Mayo said I had to go to Florida or someplace silly for them to treat me with my insurance. And...

    Autopilot for Roberston Stol 185

185 autopilot a long time ago I put an STEC 55 in my A185E. This plane has a Bush STOL kit installed. When I asked for approval from STEC, they gave it to me with a minor flight restriction.

    South Dakota pheasant

Just got back from South Dakota. Lots of standing corn. Lots of soft ground and water. Had to work a little harder, but still had good shooting and got my 12 birds(4 days). I prefer December when it is frozen, but we had good weather last week. Lots and lots of geese. They were landing in the...
