Yes, that is why I had the tungsten bolted to the tail of the RV8. But, I was basically racing straight and level, and didn't care much about optimizing short field and climb performance. As others have said, remove weight from the nose, or shift it rearward, but don't add any.
I really don't understand how adding weight to an airplane improves it.
