I met a lot of them after buying Buck Stewert's lodge up the Talkeetna in '96. Great folks. Jay had taken over his dads business at that time. Doug was flying raft trips In to our gravel bar strip then also..
My favorite strips in the area are Fish Lake and Shearer in the Selway Bitteroot wilderness ID, and Shafer Meadows in the Great Bear MT. Much more solitude. The others can be crowded. Fish Lake normally has moose feeding in the lake.

I worked at Icy Bay in '92. One of the most scenic places in the state on a clear day!!! Kept my 185 at the camp strip and explored a lot of S Central. Met the Clause family at Ultima Thule when Paul's dad was still there. Awesome country.
Another really BAD dog, Michael Oros who terrorized Northern BC in the 70's and 80's. Decent Into Madness is the book. Just as tough as Albert Johnson.
Ford now specs their 3.5 L V6 (213 cubic inch) Eco Boost engine at 400 Hp and 500 ft. lbs. Torque!!! I always thought it took cubic inches. My 2013
is rated 360 HP and they are all there!!

I joined the Toledo (WA) flying club in '71. They had 2 150s 1@ $7 the other at $8 (electric flaps) / hour wet. A 172 @ $12 and a PA 28-180 at $14!! Instructor was $5. I think I was making about $3.50/hour so it still wasn't cheap.

Bear preparedness is the key!! Dug clams at Silver Salmon Beach, Cook Inlet, with 2 airplanes, 5 people and 7 brown bears. They were very preoccupied with eating clams and never bothered us. One was the size of a Volkswagen bus!!

I spent most of the year at the logging camp at Icy Bay in '92. The gulf coast from Cape Spencer to Cordova is a pilot's dream. I learned a tremendous amount from the locals about flying the area and beach landings. I had 8.50 x 6's on my 185 at the time, when most of the locals were running...
I made the trip several times with my PA12-180. 22 hours tach time Anchorage to Portland area. Atlee tanks. Anchorage to Whitehorse via Skolai pass then Whitehorse to friends near Anahim Lake BC and home the 3rd day. Definitely need the long range tanks.
When I installed the heat pump in my cabin in S central WA about 8 years ago, I specified a wi fi controlled thermostat. I leave it set at 45° for freeze protection when I'm gone. If I'm heading that way, I turn it up to 68 or so using my phone or laptop. Then fire up the wood stove when I...
I found a Widgeon in a very remote back country hangar probably 30 years ago. It had the Ranger engines! The owner wasn't interested in selling it. He also had several Rangers on pallets. I'd bet it's still there! Now that would be a PROJECT!!

Ok. Gotta contribute here. In my 28 years of flying my 185 , a very light plane, to many off airport places, I found keeping the tail up was best. Mainly to see obstacles ahead. My check out instructor thought nothing but wheel landings (1989) which turned out invaluable. As MTV said, I...
Cant imagine a better plane for my use. My '67 185 served my purpose for 28 years. Most years flew from WA to my remote camp east of Talkeetna. Flight planned 140 knots and 14 gph. Empty weight was 1790 and full fuel could still put 1000 lbs. inside legally. Due to medical issues, sold it 5...
