One reason most people keep the connection on the underside of the belly is if you go to floats or damage the line it is quick and easy to remove and cap, or remove and replace.
I think the best part about this trip is he was able to take the better half and was not stuck stranded where she was totally uncomfortable!! A long trip like that to have so much work like planned...
