Nah - better to use hardened chain. Also helps if you are nose heavy. Use in toilet too, to make sure that never breaks.
The guys on J3 Cub forum have a letter from an ASI stating something like if you submit a request and they do not stamp block 3, it is because it is a minor alteration. It was specific to an engine...
Well, there you go. Buy that, mail in a 337, and you are legal.
This forum is a gold mine!
It would have to be on a 337. If field approved, look in block 3 for an FAA stamp. I don't think there is an STC.
If it were me, I would just make sure somebody annualed it, and pretend I didn't...
Field approval. I did PA11 struts on two, but other than a 6 lb weight gain, not sure I accomplished anything. PA18 struts would be way overkill, and just add another four lbs. Use the 11s if you...
My experience is even with flaps up, a full power climb out will make them shake pretty good. Most don't know that because it is really difficult to turn around and look - especially for older folk....
I haven't read the STC; I thought it was a 1/2" square tube. Hard to believe that tube adds anything structurally, but a friend did a heavy brake application on my Cub and the little Vee- thing...
My trim cable and pulleys have 6700 hours on them. Always worked great. I shot some Tri-Flow on the jack screw in October, and the trim system stopped working in November.
I assumed the cabl or...
SAFE just sent me a note saying "beware of the complicated drop-downs on the new medical form." They said it doesn't apply to BasicMed.
BasicMed is a winner! I disagree a lot with Jim Inhofe,...
The J3 and Super Cub have similar drag profiles. One year long ago a buddy and I set out for Lock Haven. His was a PA18-150 with VGs and cables; mine was a stock J3 with 85 and wing tank. We flew...
I guess I don't run 180 hp engines at 2200 rpm. Mine is placarded red from 2000-2250. I run it 2400 squared until I hit full throttle. Getting old and tired, but fine wire plugs make it think it...
I have flown both, and far prefer the 160. My Decathlon has the 180, and I kinda wish I could replace it with the 160.
My impression is that the 160 burns 7 1/2 gph; the 180 in the Dec with fuel...
Can't believe I did not contribute here. I see 6000 hour Cub galvanized cables. Just saw both rudder cables replaced after 600 hours on a Super Cub. stainless. But worse - the restorer put...
Mine are original. They seem dead soft. I am guessing .016, like the leading edges. I have a micrometer in the hangar if it is important. The lower ones have 90 and 180 degree folds. 2024-0? ...
I use Grove masters. They really need a bleeder screw in my opinion. I drill and tap 1/8 NPT as far forward on top as I can get. I can use a clear piece of model airplane fuel hose into a jar for...
Using the adapter, as the strut is folded through 180 degrees the bungee un-stretches a bit. That resulted in one side being stretched more than the other. In retrospect, the "engine hoist" method...
All of that. The nails are the most important. Have somebody else double check the wing root to make sure all wires and cables are disconnected. All of them! Ten minutes if prep was complete with...
You are correct. I am only familiar with Aeroquip. I rarely build these things up. I use them only for engine oil applications - oil pressure gauge, oil cooler, etc.
I have seen problems with parking brakes on Cubs. Four different aircraft, two different systems - inadvertent brake lock. Only damage so far was a broken tail wheel. Usually the owner is not aware...
Good idea with the Dremel. I just borrow a mandrel.
Thanks. I made an adapter yesterday, and will try it. Yes, shock rings can kill you. A local mechanic lost an eye. I shudder when I think of how I replaced my first set.
I think once you deviate from the original you can use anything you want. I am pretty careful to specify what hoses and fittings I use on field approved brake systems. For Cubs and Aeroncas I...
Original was automotive. #4 inverted flare and 1/8" pipe. We have not yet figured out which Plymouth the original flex hoses came off of, but current production hoses are 4000 psi operating, 5000...
We have one of those. Looks like it stretches one side at the expense of the other.
But do we need HD bungees?
oops. Answered my own question - 1080 HD.
The shop sent a pair over to be...
