Kiwi restoration

Hi all

Well after a year of following this forum I can now contribute. Two mates and I have just purchased a PA-18 and are about to begin the long journey of restoration. This thing has been sitting in a farm shed in New Zealand for the last 20 years but all things considered is in remarkable condition. Thanks in advance for the wealth of information and knowledge we will no doubt be seeking!

Show us some pics as you tear it down. It will be interesting to see the layout and condition of a bird that's sat for 20 years.

For sure. Will be back up staying with Rob at Labour weekend. Would be keen to have a look at your machine.

Apart from the birds nest and crap it is pretty good. Very dry and so far no obvious corrosion/rotting. Heres a couple more pics prior to starting work.20170613_190309.jpg20170917_104626.jpg20170613_190128.jpg

Love it ! Finding a 90 horse Cub in a barn. That radio sure is an antique. Those cow flap flaps look functional. The fabric looks so nice (from the other side of the globe) it would be a shame to rip it off. If you do take it off, do it neatly in order to use it as a pattern for the new inspection and cable openings.

Nope. We have the complete set of logbooks from day 1. Had a short stint in Fiji early on and some time in the Nth Is training but most of its life down south.

Can anyone help with the process for removing the firewall? We want to get it on a rotator. We have the engine and bolt on stuff out, I assume it comes off with the boot cowl?

Yea the fabric is in good condition but we will be recovering it. 20 years is a long time to sit around and we want to make sure everything is checked and ok. Plus restoring it is half the fun!

A little wash job and air in the tires, and you should be ready to fly!

If the fabric condition checks out OK,
I'd be inclined to just do an oil change & annual inspection
and see how it flies!
Sometimes those engines that've been sitting will surprise you on how well they run out.

Sorry, mistaken on identity of radio. It's a tuner as was the LTRA-6. I still have that old 180 radio, a Wright Executive 60, maybe the first digital.

Congrats team, I'm jealous of your journey. You could just get the fabric tested and it might be fine, look forward to seeing the old girl in the air!!

The firewall is riveted to the bootcowl. It co,es off as an assembly. Pull the windshield and the two cover plates around the V tubes behind the windshield.

Thanks. Looks like a similar project to what you have done. Some awesome footage around of your adventures.

Getting well through the dismantling stage now. So far no surprises, everything looks in great shape.
