This was the original panel in my Italian L-21B. It was actually used as an instrument trainer, and had the old AN gyros (big and heavy!). I removed the gyros and the vacuum pump to save weight. You can see the shock-mounted gyro panel, on which I had mounted my Garmin 295. I am currently rebuilding it, and will mount the Garmin 296 (496?) in a Gizmo mount in that panel. While the contour is high, it doesn't obstruct my forward vision. My 3" gear and 0-Thrust mount accomplish that for me. I like it because it is original, and I've never seen another like it. It will be better organized and black crinkled when finished. Also, I plan to move the elctrical panel to the area in the bottom middle. I will fabricate a sub-panel for that. _________________ Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. - Helen Keller |

Ha, a fellow suffer! I'm in the process of laying out my panel and I am fighting this urge. While I do believe you can't have too much information, I'm trying hard not to end up with a mock up of the Star Trek Enterprise bridge.
Wish me luck!

Didn't Star Wars prove that you don't need all that Star Trek junk?

Here is the one that we built from scratch. Mine is a wide body so it is a couple inches wider than stock. We also kept the bottom up as high as possible for more leg room. It is powder coated. _________________ John Breitinger

Just finished my new panel. It took a lot of thinking and measuring to get everything to fit. I put all the switches on the left so I don't have to take my right hand off of the stick to make any adjustments. This was my first panel design and I really enjoyed it. |

Here's a panel I machined from a Univair blank. Just got it back from the powder coater.

Ron, that is very interesting.... it is similar to the way my original L-21B panel was, especially with the high rounded shape and the shock panel! I'm sure our planes must have been siblings! As you can see I also had the gyros & vacuum pump removed, replaced by a Garmin 396 / Airgizmos docking station.

Looks good Christina. I have finished the sub-panel (gyro panel), and will post a pic of it.
I was there to pick out this cub from the first group that came from Italy. It was imported by a friend of mine Ron Jones, of Texas Turbo Jet. He brought in 44 L-21B's and 4 L-19's in this batch. He later bought another load of them, but I don't know how many. Mine was the only one I ever saw with the full gyro panel. Yours is the only other one I have seen with this setup. _________________ Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. - Helen Keller |

| Ron, your idea of a airgizmo and a 396/496 is a good one. I've been using the 496 in the WX mode and don't know if I could ever give it up! The knowledge of whats behind that big rainstorm in front of you really takes the pressure off. I've never had this capability in a light single before. The 396/496 is a remarkable device! Bill |

Bill, I thought the 296 was the cat's meow until I flew Sam Beckett's SC across the continent. I believe the weather function on his 496 probably saved me a day in a 4-day trip. It certainly sets the mind at ease, knowing what's around the next corner. _________________ Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. - Helen Keller |

Ron, I never saw another panel like mine, either, until I saw your picture. Here's what mine looked like when I bought it and before I had the gyros & vacuum pump taken out.
