I see there’s some interest in the Schneider 4000’s; we’ve had these on our 180 for about 10 years.
These come in three widths; 15”(which we have), and I believe 19 and 23”. Some people have put wider bottoms on the 15’s, I’ve heard.
The 15’s work fine here in the northeast. We’ve operated successfully in 24” of snow, and they work great in our typical 10-12”.(typical except this year)
On glaciers, etc. I’d recommended the wider ones. For our application; the 15’s are lighter, turn well, and are fast in the air. 145 mph indicated with the skis and pod,..Pponk, 86” 401, 2450/22”. We fly with similar airplanes that have Airglas 3600’s, with similar results. We might be a touch faster.
There is an option to deflate the tire, slip in a plate, them reinflate the tire. This effectively turns them into straight skis. I have no experience with this.
There’s a permanent stub fitting inboard, and another outboard that slips into the hollow ski axle. Huge springs vs bungees. These springs are hard to attach, the tail needs to be lifted very high, or the airplane hanging from the float lift rings.
Twitchell Lake was great, we had a great time!
