Yeah I know I should be ashamed of ruining a good song for this, but it sounds ok after a couple beers around a camp fire. Well maybe more than a couple... Alex Clark Oct 2004

"Cub Drivers In The Sky"

An old Bush Pilot went out a flyin?,, out one dark and windy day,
Through a storm he wandered, as he cruised along his way
When all at once a mighty fleet of ghost-like Cubs he saw
Come blastin? through the ragged skies,,,, and up a cloudy draw.

Look out below,, we?re flying too slow?
Cub drivers in the sky

Their props were rings of fire and their wings were made of steel
Their tires were black and shiny and their hot exhaust he could feel
A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky
He saw the ghost pilots coming hard... and he heard their mournful cry

Look out below,, now we?re flying too low..
Cub drivers in the sky.

Their windscreens fogged, their fuel run low, their headsets soaked with sweat
They're flyin' hard to reach home base, but they ain?t got there yet
'cause they've got to fly forever in that storm up in the sky
In Bush Planes breathing fire,,, flying past you?ll hear them cry

Look out below,, we?ve a thousand miles to go?.
Cub drivers in the sky.

As the Flyers slipped on by him, he heard one radio his name
If you want to save your soul from hell a flyin o?er this stormy range
Then fly-boy change your ways today or with us you will fly
Tryin' to reach a landing strip.... across these endless skies.

Look out below,, we?re flying low n? slow?.
Cub drivers in the sky.

He foolishly ignored them, as he flew along his way.
The storm clouds turning darker,,, as was the price he?d have to pay.
For when Mother Nature holds the cards, it?s all a hopeless bet
And that cold hand on your shoulder,,,,, is the Reaper collectin? debt??

Look out below,, now your gas is too low?.
Cub drivers in the sky.

This tale happened years ago, when that pilot disappeared
The legend says he?s still up there, by lightning bolts he steers..
So if you are a pilot,, never gamble with your soul?.
Or you?ll join that old bush pilot,,, on that endless storm patrol?.

Watch out below,,, don?t wager your soul,,,
Cub drivers in the sky
Cub drivers in the sky,
Cub drivers in the sky?
Cub drivers in the sky

I sure hope not. I sat down with the original song this morning and started to plug in the new words. It took about one bowl of oatmeal and a cub of green tea.

The dog is still staring at me for singing to the computer.

Female sled dogs don't know squat about singing with a Johnny Cash twist. They always tend to lean towards the Shannia Twain end of the industry...

Oh My.

Just went through ~6 versions in my CD collection. (Yes, I bought 'em all, didn't just download...) Original Sons of the Pioneers, back before the Lead Singer, Leonard Sly, changed his name and went into the movies, through WAY cool cover by Riders in the Sky, and quite a bunch in between. And of course, three or four song parodies....

Oh My. This works for me. Gonna change my ways, mortage the future and buy another 'Cub.

This has the potential for making one of the notorious RoadTape lists.

Thank you! Cubscout.

Alex, your version is better than the original! Thanks!

Steve, you'll have to learn this one to sing at Nolstein next year.

Anne.

I added a couple of stanzas (verses?) on the end for the Halloween season. Originally I had it somewhat more gruesome but I figured I would make it a G rated song so as not to get anyones skivvies in a bunch..
Of course now it sounds more like a safety song than a Halloween sing along...

Oh well, I better go figure out how to get the cub out of the lake before it starts to really get cold...

I managed to get the kids into a sing-along the other night. I had them try it. Some of the words don't exactly roll off the tongue. But then again they were all laughing so hard that hardly anyone was really singing. They did like doing the horn instrument part after the leading lines of each whatever the heck you call em...

Unfortunately my spouse (Iron Inge) says that if I have time for this type of activity,, I need something else to keep me occupied such as making more money. ( that well known german sense of fun coming through again.)
So I hope somebody shows up this winter for tail-wheel endorsements or possibly ski instruction. I would hate to have to go back to being a Law Dawg. 20 years of that was more than enough..
Anyone know of a place that might need a flight instructor or firearms instructor for a couple of months.???

Alex,
Classic Rock had let me down, and I migrated to a C&W station the other day. Heard one that you may work your lyrical cub magic on while your sitting up there on these long winter nights in Homer: Brad Paisley's "Get a Little Mud On The Tires". I just can't listen to it without thinking there's got to be a cub spin on this.
Regards
Chris

You are right. I was working on the cub skyloight today down at the hanger and that song came up on the radio. I was thinking the same thing......

We need help...

Alex - I think this is what you're looking for.....

Artist: Brad Paisley
Song: Mud On The Tires Lyrics

I've got some big news, the bank finally came through,
And I'm holding the keys to the brand new Chevrolet
Have you been outside? It sure is a nice night
How about a little test-drive, down by the lake?
There's a place I know about, where the dirt road runs out
We can try out the four-wheel drive
Come on now whata' ya say? Girl I can hardly wait-
To get a little mud on the tires

Cause it's a good night, to be out there soakin' up the moonlight
Steak out a little piece of shoreline, I got the perfect place in mind
It's in the middle of nowhere, only one way to get there
Gotta get a little mud on the tires

Moonlight on a duck vine, catfish on a trout line
Sun sets about nine, this time of year
We can throw a blanket down, crickets singing in the background
And more stars than you can count on a night this clear
Tell ya what we need to do, grab a sleepin' bag or two
And build us a little campfire
Then with a little luck, we might just get stuck
Lets get a little mud on the tires

Cause it's a good night, to be out there soakin' up the moonlight
Steak out a little piece of shoreline, I got the perfect place in mind
It's in the middle of nowhere, only one way to get there
Gotta get a little mud on the tires

Then with a little luck, we might just get stuck
Lets get a little mud on the tires

Google is an amazing thing.....................

Well, it sounds as though we'll need a guitar, a campfire and some tone-deaf singers who have been around noisy aircraft for a little too long...well, shoot, partner, ain't that what we've a got down there in New Holstein? I smell a grand ole supercub opry in the air, isn't that what I smell?

Sure "Google" Gunny,,,
Now I know what accountants listen to in their cars.
Hey your still OK in my book.

Chris

PS When are we going to get a little mud on 'your' tires?

Mikey,

Some times I's listens ta Country, some times I's listens ta Rock n' Roll, but mosly I's jus listens to da Blues.......

Got out Sunday and certified myself on bushwheel handling and operations up at Hansens - too much fun. Detailed account and photos to follow.

I didn't like country until I was posted overseas for a LOOOONG time.
One day I noticed that the fake-o bands that were playing in all of the other countries around the world, could imitate rock & roll, soul and easy listening. (well sorta),, but they could not do country. Little Filipino or Vietnamese voices doing Willie Nelson songs is enough to make you puke.

So eventually real U.S./Canadian Country/folk music became the only thing that reminded me of home and kept me totally sane. Well OK closer to sane...
