Federal vs Fluidyne straight skis

55-PA18A

I have a set of Fluidyne A2000A straight skis. The TC for PA-18 lists Federal A2000A skis. What's the difference? Is it just a name change, or are they actually different?

Federal and Fluidyne were two separate companies. At one point, they became one company, and now they’re both part of Wipaire. But the skis were approved on seperate type certificates, and STCs. You could talk to the FAA about it, but I’m guessing that if you want to install a set of Fluidyne on an airplane that only has approval for Federals, you’re likely looking at a field approval. That may work in some areas, not so much in others.

If you don’t care about paper work, I doubt if anyone would notice in any case.
