Google says $1100 in 1947 is worth $12,600 today...

In 1968 my friend paid $2500 for a J3 with 40 hours on a total rebuild and a Mattituck major Overhaul and a new metal prop. The local experts told him he was crazy for paying that much for a cub.

I think i was making $9K a year then.

$1200 for me, in 1962. They laughed at me because I didn't bargain; just wrote the check. They wound up being friends.

Still have it - five landings today! Yay!
