Designing The Cessna 180

Fascinating! The high speed stability testing reminded me of when we were certifying the EDO 696-3500 floats on my 185. We (the FAA test pilot and me) were diving the plane at 190 mph when I was noticing how twitchy the plane felt in yaw. It felt if we allowed the slip ball to move at all away from the center that the plane would swap ends. It was very clear to me at that time of how the addition of the floats increased the cross section area ahead of the CG. This emphasized the importance of increasing the area of the vertical tail surfaces when floats are installed. This could be part of the reason that some planes have a lower Vne when floats are installed.
