Can an Avionics Repair Station sign off work done on our Experimental Aircraft

Why use 10 words when 10,000 will do?

I had to go to the local FSDO yesterday to get a revised airworthiness certificate with my new tail number on it.
Back in the day, maintenance inspectors would bring stuff like this out to you, but no more.
So about a 3-1/2 hour round trip drive, including a toll bridge.
Besides the new registration application & old a/w certificate the applicable FAA webpage said I needed to take,
the FSDO folks said they wanted a copy of my old registration, a letter to the FSDO explaining why I wanted a new a/w cert,
and my logbooks (I just made copies of the entries from my last annual). Overkill IMHO.
I was afraid the inspector was gonna similarly make way too big of a deal of this, but he was actually pretty cool.
FWIW here's an image of the FAA's new NW Mountain Region HQ in Des Moines WA (near SeaTac).
I thought it was a "federal building" with a bunch of other agencies housed there, but nope- it's all FAA.
Close to 300,000 sq feet and 1,600 employees.
Fenced parking lot with one entrance, armed guard at the gate, several armed guards and a metal detector at the lobby.
I had to walk all the way back out to my car & leave my pocketknife in it (no checking it at the guard station).
And there's no unescorted movement inside the building.
I felt like I was inside the pentagon.
