    2018 Texas STOL Roundup

Mark your calendars, September 28, 29 & 30th for the 5th Annual Texas STOL Roundup.

We will be back at Hondo (KHDO) and barring another hurricane we will have a couple of grass areas available for airplane camping on a first come first served basis, we will be competing off our grass runway, and spectators will have a front row seat. See the event map at the bottom of the Rules & Registration page for the specific areas. We are also working to get a crop duster to spray pesticide over the grass areas to knock back the fire ants etc.

This year Mike Vivion will join myself, Ken Wittekiend and Paul Brown for the STOL/Backcountry Flying Seminar. Last year this was standing room only so we will move it from the training room to the hangar floor.

The new T-shirts are available for sale at our website.

    Hope to see you there.

Grass Runway & Grass Camping Areas

Grass Runway & Grass Camping Areas

Just finished a meeting with the city of Hondo, the airport, and the Chamber of Commerce. Our Air Boss Jimmy was on site. Thought you would like to know that the grass runway that we will use in this year's competition is in excellent shape and the two areas we've secured for camping on the grass and the spectator area on the grass are all being mowed frequently.

Here is a map of the layout we plan for this year.

    Martin Marietta- Texas STOL Roundup

Excited to announce (and so should you be) that Martin Marietta is again a sponsor that is picking up the cost of the porte-potties at this year's event. Kind of an important component and not very glamorous. Thank you Martin Marietta.

On another note we greatly expanded the grass camping area and I'll have a new map up shortly.

    Expanded grass camping area

We've modified the grass camping area. This makes the grass camping area larger then the area we had at Llano on the grass runway.

Rusty's Flying Service @ TX STOL Roundup

Excited to tell you guys that our Air Boss Jimmy flew down to Hondo today to check out the progress of the grass runway and camping areas and said everything is coming along nicely.

He then flew over to Rusty's Flying Service in hopes of enlisting them for spraying these areas before the Roundup to kill off the ants and chiggers and make camping on the grass more enjoyable. Rusty is pleased to help us. Hopefully we will get him to stop by during the Roundup, if he does please be sure and show him your appreciation for his help.

Been talking to several about the STOL contest at Hondo this year. We are all looking forward to it. How is the grass looking? Hopping for great weather, fun flying and hanging out with some fun people and Kevin as well as long as you tech his airplane.

Jimmy flew down to Hondo this morning for a meeting. He said the grass runway is in impeccable shape. Grass camping areas are being kept mowed. The week of the event we will water the runway (assuming no rain) and a crop duster will spray the runway and the camping areas to knock back the crawly creatures. In other news:

It’s where Pierce points out to an official all the planes that beat him last year questioning the legality of their mods. “Field approval” and “no it’s not a catto, look the sticker says Sensenich” are the most common rebuttles.

Oh; that sounds reasonable..... I though perhaps someone is illegally using helium in their tires... Hmmm. that might be better then the nitrogen

LOL, it is a running joke between Kevin and I. I keep competing in the certified class with my old 150 hp Super Cub with a Borer prop and getting beat by these guys with these McCatto props so I gotta give them some ribbing.

So helium in the tires is fine but it doesn't stay long so you'll need to bring extra.

As you've guessed by now we don't have any tech inspections but we do know what a helicopter looks like and we draw the line there.

So this is pretty cool. A long time competitor and demo team pilot Will Evans, who flies Nemo an orange/white 182, is sponsoring this year's Roundup only because he knows the level of effort and cost it takes to put on an event like this- thanks Will!

Part of his sponsorship will go to a get together Friday night where we will have a camp fire, shoot an anvil into the air, and who knows what other mischief or high jinks we can partake in- we are still in the planning stages, if you've got any ideas let me know. Should be fun. Be sure and thank Will when you see him.

Anyone traveling from western NY down to Hondo? Leaving about the 17th from Rochester NY area and traveling a bit slower to see clients down to Steve Pierce then to eastern San Antonio over to Hondo on Thursday/Friday.

Better idea of areas I'm seeing and dates will follow.

Too much work. Spent too much time flying the cub this year. Only 100hrs sense April. Why don’t you tag along with the okies and come up to the wad.

I sure will one of these days. Right now, I also have a work addiction and a 3 year old little girl that hasn’t figured out how to saddle her own damn pony yet. I leave, and that’s all I’ll hear about.

Doug Turnbull/TURNBULL MANUFACTURING and Dennis Smith/STOL AIRCRAFT MAGAZINE have teamed up again this year to provide another Turnbull enhanced lever action .45-70 rifle for raffle for the STOL competition participants. Come by our booth to register for the raffle. Last year there were only 38 entries. Great odds for a chance at a $1000.00 rifle. You must be a competitor and over 21 to register and win. No purchase is necessary.
