Narco radio display

The display in my Narco Com 810 TSO has been getting worse & worse.
It dims to nothing at night, and even just on a dark day or in the hangar.
I finally decided to address the problem.
Did some research & determined that I needed Narco display p/n 50226-0001.
Found a few on ebay for $200-250, but I ended up buying one from DigiKey.com.
Their p/n 541-1411-ND, $146 delivered.

Easy to install- remove freq knobs w/ an itty-bitty allen key,
then remove radio faceplate by removing two small plastic screws on each end.
Then gently slide the old display (a flat piece of glass) up a bit, then out and away from radio.
Slide new display into place & reassemble.
Nothing to it.
FWIW I talked to a couple local radio guys, either one would have nicked me a c-note to do it.

That is good news. I have one of those, and so far the only problem is its dim feature is reversed - dim for day and bright for night. Oh, and it takes a special network to input nav ID tones.

If it ever fails completely, I will install a Garmin com. But for now, I shall record your source in the logbook!

I have a working Narco available. Make me an offer.

This is strange, it don't show anything unless you shine a flashlight on the little light sensor than it shows all digits BRIGHT. Maybe I need that part you replaced. It works fine as long as I have a light to shine on it, day or night its blank but shine a light onto the sensor and brightens all digits.

Same symptoms as mine had.
I would guess that a new display would cure it, just like it did mine.
There is a dimmer adjustment, but it only controls how "dim" it gets in the dark--
doesn't effect how bright it gets in the light.
You might try tweaking it anyway--
there should be an itty-bitty hole just to the right of the freq knobs.
Stick a jeweler size screwdriver in there and give her a bit of a twist.

I thought about buying a replacement.
There was one on ebay at the time,
"just removed" and "working when removed".
Yeah, maybe so...but maybe not.
$400 buy it now plus $50 S&H, $250 starting bid.
I think it went for not much more than that.
But getting used stuff (esp electronics) is kind of like buying a pig in a poke.
My radio worked just dandy except for the display issue,
I'm g
lad I went the repair route.
