Cowl Latches

The latches on the cowl also pretty worn. Is there a rebuild kit to get the fasteners to catch a little better. My wife flies the plane as well and not that mechanical. The only way to take a fuel sample from the engine sump by opening me cowl? Still learning

you didn't say what type of plane... but for -18...

most times its the "cup" in lower cowl that has deformed and cracked the lip the latch catches on..

also the latch position is adjustable by moving the washers under it's mounting bolts to door.

also make sure you still have the white rubber bumpers on rear screws

Thanks Mike. I’m sure the white bumpers are gone, any idea how I can find them. It’s for a 0320 PA12

I admire folks who can align these cowls. That is the real key to easy fastening. I never have figured out Dzus/Southco, etc. I converted my Decathlon to 10-32 and bought an electric screwdriver. Happier!

My IA made a template to align and place the latches. Worked great. Second pic is before cowling stops and washers were installed.

Stock PA12 cowl used Dzus fasteners. A lot of the WWII aircraft used them. I welded an old Dzus fastener to a slide hammer to adjust the spring it kicks into. A real bear on warbird when trying to cowl them up and the last Dzus won't catch.
