Trick Air Ski Plane fly-in at Jackson Seaplane Base McGregor, MN set for January 20th, 2018

    3rd times a charm.

Here we go again. The 3rd annual Trick Air ski plane fly in is set for January 20th with a back up day set for Sunday the 21st. This event was covered by Flying magazine last year so all of the cool kids are coming this year.

Weather didn't cooperate last year on our original weekend but we had great attendance on the rescheduled date. Same brief as last year and I will get more information up as the day gets closer. If anyone wants to make a trip of it I can handle overnight guests and welcome you. Let me know via PM or email.

Pencil it in and hope for thick ice and decent snow...

The first list of door prizes for the event

Sponsor and food provider Trick Air Skis (also official provider of 2018 fly in stocking hats)
Wipaire $100 Gift Certificate to Lake and Air and swag
Concorde Battery certificate for new battery magnetic trays and Mx tech handbooks
Whelen certificate for Parmetheus landing or taxi light and swag
Flight Flix discount coupons for swag bags
Plane Plastics vent tubes and swag items
    David Clark H-10-30 headset
Flight Outfitters Bush Pilot Portfolio bag and swag items
Trade a Plane providing print issues for swag bags
Appareo Systems providing swag bags again and swag items

More coming as the holiday season draws to a close and normal business returns

Was up at lake this weekend and we are making some serious ice. It was cold and we have lots of good hard ice with about 6 inches of powdery snow over it. If this snow holds we can easily plow a surface for the wheeled guys (dare I say parallel ski and non ski runways?)

We are part of the ski plane feature in Flying in the February issue. The winner of last year's bomb drop contest will be signing copies of the article at the event.

Hoping for a little warming trend and decent snow.....a boy can hope.

I braved the cold and after taxi testing, I had my first landings on skis. Went well. Apparently I rigged them correctly. Only problem was the low sun right down the runway/skiway. When I went to idle, the strobe effect about gave me a seizure.

The base is on the east shore to the south of Horseshoe Lake. Mogas is available at the supper club on the NE corner if needed.

If you are coming a distance and want to overnight Friday and or Saturday bring a fart sack and a pad as I will have room at the main cabin but a shortage of bunks. I have power for your Tanis but please bring cords for your plane. We should be able to park some on shore this year as the seaplane ramp had tree trimming this summer and is now passable to get to ramp in front of hangar. Let me know in advance if you are overnighting.

8 miles NE of KHZX which has 100LL and courtesy car.

Paul@flightline.tv or 612-963-1655. I will have handhelds on 122.90 on the day of.

10 day forecast calling for low 20’s and some scattered snow showers.....I am heading up north to get a snow report and look at plowing or prepping a wheels friendly surface. Will post what I find.

Also hanging some LEDs in the hangar so we can see how good that chili really is....

Forecast was updated to show low 30's and PM snow showers for Saturday. We got about 3 inches of powdery snow today and the wind was howling. That means drifting on the lake and uneven snow.....I have plow truck on standby to knock down the thicker drifts and get us a uniform surface to work with. I just dont think dragging the area will have much effect as the wind has hard packed some of the drifts.

It should be a go for wheels and skis but please check back here Friday the 19th for the latest. You can also go to Trick Air's flyin page for the latest conditions. I will have my cell with and be monitoring 122.9 the day of with conditions.

Here is what Weather.com is forecasting as of today. They moved snow showers back to Sunday for the most part. I talked to my plow guy today and we have good ice and will knock down a decent surface on Friday morning and drag it again Saturday to get the wheeled guys in. Should be a good day if the forecast holds......1 mile clear of clouds as they say.

FRI JAN 19 Partly Cloudy 36°/24° 20% chance of snow S 7 mph
SAT JAN 20 Cloudy 34°/16° 20% chance of snow WNW 5 mph

We heard via the grapevine (a cold grapevine) that the hours are 10-2 on Saturday. Paul, would you confirm?

Julie and I are hoping to make it over from Park Rapids with some other friends who are hoping to go.

We are here sunup to sundown so come when ready on Saturday.....I have plow coming in the morning (Friday) and we will get runway set up. I will update here on what we end up with but it should be good for wheels and we will plow a taxiway also. I hit it with ATV plow and got it started today.

Rumors are flying that the leading candidate for the prize for longest arrival is an internet maven and asked for green M&M’s and no autographs from locals......stay tuned for an update on his potential appearance.

Wow! Do you think the ice runway will support the Citation, or will they need to land it at the local airport?

Apparently you have never been to Minnesota in January, the ice is thick enough on my bird bath to hold up a Citation.

I flew the cub this afternoon...beautiful wx near Park Rapids MN!

The snow is about as sticky as I can ever recall. Not overflow, but it took a long time to get airborne.

I wanted to go but it would have taken me 6 hours to get there today with the winds.

Would have made it home pretty quick though.

Many thanks to Paul Jackson and Steve Schwister from TrickAir for holding and sponsoring this wonderful event! Steve and his wife made a killer batch of chili, which was a real treat as we sought refuge from the cold in Paul's hangar. Appareo was also a kind benefactor of the event. Julie and I had a great time, and we are so thankful for being a part of the Minnesota aviation community. We saw many Supercub.org friends, and many members of the MN Pilots Assn at the Fly In.

We did have a moment when our hearts stopped when a pilot flying a taildragger on skis landed long and quickly discovered that the brakes don't work well on glare ice. It was truly a miracle that aircraft weren't bent and that noone was hurt. Paul and his ground crew had prepared a really nice (ice) runway, and there was snow on either side for landing on skis. We held our breath when we saw what was happening, but it turned out well. I suspect that the pucker factor inside that cockpit was only rivaled by the pucker factor of those whose airplanes were in harms way. A learning experience for all who witnessed it...

Thanks everyone for coming out for the TrickAir Jackson SPB flyin today. Wow, what an amazing day, record breaking attendance and perfect weather. Many thanks to host Paul Jackson, son Blake and a many friends who kept everyone safe, moved a lot of airplanes around in the snow and generously gave their time to make this event possible. Check out some pictures.
