    Fall Colors Side Lake

Hello all my airplane friends! This is Shelley Jaranson! It is that time of year again. I hope this letter is finds you are well! It is that time of year again, the 2017 fall colors tour is right around the corner! I'm wishing to see as many of you as possible. You can come early or leave late, we can accommodate! I haven't seen some of you in many years that I wish I could see at this David Jaranson Memorial fly In. There is camping available, delicious food, all the free beer you can drink, but only if you're not flying, sweatshirts available and lots of laughing and celebrating! You are all so special to me and I wish each and everyone of you could make it. For those of you who are coming, thank you so much in advance and looking forward to seeing you all! For those of you who can't make it, we will be thinking about you! If you have any questions about locations and such, you can message Skycop, Tom Powell, Steve Johnson, and myself on SuperCub.org. We are looking forward to having one of the biggest and best Fly Ins we've had so far. Hope to see you here starting 21(st) and the 22nd-24th of September!! Blue skies and tailwinds to everyone!

    I love you all👍

Is this an invite only kind of event since there's no location or nav aid for the inexperienced?

GPS coordinates N47* 39'18 - W93* 00' 12. Or 19.8 miles NNW of KHIB on the 338 radial. A little over 1800' in length with clear approaches from both ends.

Wish I could make it, this is one of the very best fly ins ever. Also don't miss the Wild Rice Casserole, Jean gave Patty the recipe years ago at one of the fly ins and its super.

Mike, Eddie noticed your mention of the wild rice casserole and asked me if we still had some wild rice. Well, yes, we do...so I guess I will be making a casserole soon! He is planning to come to the fly-in...weather permitting!

Have the trees on the west side been cut? Just curious. I am hoping to make it this year, especially after missing it last year.

Yes the trees on the west are gone which allows you to enter into a clear cut if needed.

He doesn't need it Ryan. When the Jackpines were still there he cleared them by 50 feet in his 172.
Thank a sheepdog today for they are standing guard!

What? You mean to tell me that someone flew a 172 to a Supercub flying? The nerve of some people!

Just don't bring a Cherokee (PA18+10), the shame is unbearable and the runway on the short side.

If anyone has any questions please call or text me. If it gets too late of a start we will stick with local flying but also try and head over to Tower for a visit. As usual, we will play it by ear as the morning scud clears. But never give up...the wx people are paid by the hour lol.

I write a monthly column for Minnesota Flyer magazine, as president of the MN Pilots Assn, and my deadline was yesterday (30 minutes ago). I struggle sometimes with finding something to write, but the Fall Colors Tour is about inspiring as it can get, so here is what I submitted. Don't tell the publisher that I released this to you before it is in print...as I don't want to get fired! Promise? Thanks.

Tomorrow morning I am planning to launch on a mission to partake in the annual Fall Colors Tour, which is held annually in memory of David Jaranson, of Side Lake, Minnesota. David was special, in that his love of flying his green and white super cub was unsurpassed. He loved life and flying. We treasure the memories that this young man gave us as he kept a positive outlook and a smile on his face even while he was fighting a losing battle with cancer. He was an inspiration to us then, and he continues to inspire us today, and tomorrow.

The weather forecast is more than a bit iffy for the North Shore of Lake Superior, where much of the Fall Colors Tour will take place. Still, I have looked forward to this flight and the opportunity to meet up with many friends at the nice airport at Two Harbors and take in the beauty which fall bestows on the North Shore.

Fall is an amazing time here in Minnesota, particularly when observed from the air. The landscape seems to burst with color as we fly over virtually every part of our State. There will still be some greenery, and the pine trees seem quite content to showcase the maples and birches and oaks which are intermingled into the collage.

There are some flights which are a bit more meaningful to me than others. Sure, I really enjoy flying to take in as many of the pancake breakfasts as I can during the summer, knowing that I may really not know anyone at those community events, but knowing that I help support aviation by flying in. Over the years I have developed many friendships with those who live across the State, but honestly I am never sure who I might see at the destination event. Tomorrow’s flight is quite a bit different in that most of those who meet at Two Harbors are there because of their friendship with David.

There will be twenty or so airplanes in the gaggle that forms the flight up the North Shore, and we will all meet at the airport for a briefing and to renew friendships. Jokes will be abundant, tall tales will be shared and we will take to the air with a degree of thanksgiving for the privilege of flight, for the miracle of changing of the leaves below us. There is sort of a bond created when we meet together for the briefing, sort of a Band of Brothers and Sisters, as we give thanks for the good fortune of having all met and admired our friend who has Gone West, for the good fortune of being able to look to our left and our right and wave our wings at our wingman or wingwoman, for good fortune of being able to appreciate and experience the joy of flight. David, from his perch above, will once again be smiling as we explore his neck of the woods from the air.

    Randy
