I agree with the "gone west" feeling. Geez, don't DO that...

Having written that, I suppose since Mike has gone west we are free to talk about him, as he can't hear us!

Just kidding, of course. Funny that your 170B came back North without you!

I thought it was poetic. That plane was flown to Alaska new by the fellow I bought it from, who was chief pilot at the time for Cordova Airways. He later bought it from Smitty. That airplane belongs in Alaska.....

Your plane has bushwheels now, so we decided at the "Fairbanks Crusty East Ramp Advisory Group" it could stay; even though Bushwheels are kind of a new fangle thing. The new paint almost blew it however and the plastic prop, well......Just barely, the history and tires got it past the advisory meeting, and the beer, that helped too.

I used to own a Stinson SR that was owned by Mudhole Smith. It was on 4000 floats and had wheels and Wein wood Skis. The skis had hydraulic shock absorbers.

Yes, its first owner was Cordova Airways, owned by Merle K. "Mud hole" Smith. It was picked up in Wichita by Smith's Chief Pilot at the time, Graham Mower. When Cordova began switching to 180s, Mower bought the plane from the company. He did the engine conversion, and had it painted in those colors.....twice over the years. He said he wanted it to be visible if he ever went down.

Mower was a claims adjuster on aircraft accidents for many years, and used the 170 to investigate claims. He also developed Chulatna Lake Lodge, and used the plane to pioneer that development.

There are photos of the plane in a couple of books about Dall's Sheep hunting, with the plane in its original paint, on skis on glaciers.

The airplane has an interesting history. And it's seen some use.....

Yes I would say that 170 belonged back in Alaska! I talked briefly with the new owner a few years back, he was a helicopter pilot (from SE AK), working on getting his fixed wing commercial.
