172 Found. Pilot Missing.

Ph.D. applicant. What's not to wonder? Scrambled eggs on toast after that grind? I'd have jumped with a chute but...? May have been his last act of independence. Hope he's alive and free.

The door handles have an over center locking position. IF the pilot jumped out in flight one would not have been in a locked position. There is no mention of this in the articles. If they were both found in the locked position this would be a mystery. If one was unlocked the answer to the question is a slam dunk suicide.

Could go out the baggage door, but they should have been able to notice that if not damaged in the crash.

Other than being difficult to get to, does it have an inside latch?
It's a key lock from the outside but it's a flimsy enough latch that it could be kicked out easily. But of course, that should be noticeable. There was a tragic case many years ago where a child was allowed to play behind the rear seat in a Cherokee and fell out of the baggage door that was "locked".

The Cessna baggage doors I've had use spring latches. If somebody went out in-flight the wind would blow it closed and latched. The same would be true for the front door but like Sky says it wouldn't be locked from the inside. Maybe the pilot intended to leave a mystery behind.
