At our meeting tonight, they showed a clip from the 'Hints for home builder' video series on 3D parts.

I had no idea this resource was there. I used some of the videos in the past to help with my build. (Rib lacing video got watched a dozen times I think)

Lots of awesome parts and the files are there for members. You can also download a free Solidworks program if you are a member and don't use it for evil ( making money).

I am thinking of fairings on naked gear legs and strut fairings. The wire standoffs were neat. Had to watch it again. Might look into a 3D printer for my birthday.

wow, cool stuff! Thanks for sharing. If only the access to printers were easier.....

Might check with your local library for 3D printers. Our local one have several and you can bring your own spool or use theirs for a price.

Lots of communities now have "maker spaces" which have all kinds of cool tools. If you have never checked out "Make" magazine (http://makezine.com/) and the Maker movement, it is super fun. If there is a Maker Faire in your city, go to it - take your kids too!

I have the older version of this:
http://www.makerfarm.com/index.php/3d-printer-kits/prusa-8-i3v-kit-v-slot-extrusion.html

Excellent kit and I have made many things with it. That said the plastic extrusions are not strong enough to build any "airworthy parts" from. Great for forms, non structural stuff etc. Check out thingiverse for millions? of already designed parts that you can download and just print with no programming needed. I find the ABS plastic to be far stronger than the "green" PLA. You can fume the ABS finished with acetone and it is very strong as far as plastic goes.
