Randy Acord who is no longer with us, lived in Fairbanks from WW II till he passed. During the war, he was an AAC Captain and pilot, who was assigned to the cold weather test program at Fort Waignwright near Fairbanks.
Randy had a number of photos of a P-51 and a P-38 both on straight skis, that he evaluated during the war. He had some great stories about those and the many other airplanes he flew in cold weather test.
If you're ever in Fairbanks visit the Air Museum in Pioneer Park, where there are a lot of Randy's memorabilia.
And, yes, I always figured Randy pretty much had the best bragging rights when it came to ski flying.
