I thought for sure this was posted here already, but seems I can't find it if it was.

Update on Bally's bomber from EAA :
On Monday, Nov 14, 2016, Jack Bally`s scale replica B-17 took to the air for the first time, completing a short flight from its home field to a local airport for continued flight tests. It has been a 17-year journey for Jack. We hope to see videos and photos posted soon.

Somewhere near Dixon, IL there is a man with a very big grin on his face.

I am extremely impressed with the dedication he put into seeing this project through completion! What an amazing feat!

I can't seem to find any video of the flight. I'd love to see it in the air.

If you’ve not seenHere's they just posted some more videos of Bally’s Bomber - I’d post the videos here but haven’t been able to copy direct links.

I can't post a working copied link on here also. Here's how I have to do it. I put it in a reply on the J3 site and hit preview, its active in the preview over there and I recopy it and paste it here and it works. Go figure?

Not sure if it’s just me but the landing looked a little sporty.....or a lot. Whoever’s the 1/4 scale pilot is, they did a good job. I almost pooped myself before the flare

I give this guy immeasurable amounts of credit for what he accomplished. To scale up from a set of RC plans and build a 1/3 scale 4 engine B-17G replica of the real thing takes that one-in-a-million guy. That and the 18 years he's worked on it hand crafting ever part.

Is it wrong to say he could have used some help on his panel?

Gotta love those F-30 Hirth engines. They have torque and a growl like no other 2-stroke. I used just one to power a small bipe, 95hp. These are running direct with small props, even with the derating and prop ineffciencies, bet its a fun ride. Wonder if these have the new Hirth feedback injection, it monitors EGT real time. I think he bought them some time ago.

Quick note, seems Bally is planning on taking the bomber to Oshkosh.

That would be fun to fly for a while. I think that I heard a few months ago that his plane was to sell it after it was done. $250,000 was mentioned. The whole exercise was to build it. This certainly was a project well done.

Well, this is interesting.
Very curious to see what it's worth to a buyer. Although I will say, if you've flown it 55 hours, wouldn't the weight & balance and speeds be pretty much nailed down?!?

Being that the plane was originally flying before any DAR had inspected it I would question if it actually has 55Hrs on it or if it has ever truly been developed. He might be hoping for $250K but in reality might not see over $30K for it at best.

Copied and pasted from their FB page.

“It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Jack Bally Sr., designer, engineer, and builder of the Bally Bomber. Jack passed away Sunday, June 21, at Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital in Dixon, Ill. Nothing gave him more joy than designing and building the Bally Bomber – and sharing it with you. He was a master carpenter, a self-taught aviation engineer, and a beloved father, husband, and friend. His legacy will live on here, in our hearts, and in the place he loved most: the sky. We will miss you, Jack. Over and out.”

That plane might be right with four Moki 400 radials on it. Sure sound the part at least.

The big Moki is about 50ish HP each, probably a bit light on power, they sound great at low power.

A quick google gives 23hp for the 400 moki, reasonable for a direct drive four stroke. Where did you see 50hp? Hard to go over 100hp/liter without hi rpm. I think it needs more power, climb seemed a little mushy. Did I read somewhere that it weighs 1800 lbs? I am impressed that it has over 50 flight hours.

That I expect is my error, very busy day work out an electronic problem, I am toast.

I expect those are paper hours.
