After a pretty slow start to ice time, things have caught up and there is plenty of ice on Little Sand Lake! The Zki Plane Flyin is a Go and we hope you will mark this on your calendar. While you are at it, please mark Paul Jackson's Ski Plane Flyin on the calendar, too! Can't have too many!

Folks, the ice is thick, we have snow on the ground (lots of it) and the Master Chef at Zorbaz is fine tuning his recipe for some soul-warming chili! All systems are a go for the 6th Annual Zorbaz Zki Plane Fly In Chili feed!

An error kept our event out of the Minnesota Flyer magazine, so please pass the word about the Fly In.

Oh, yeah...we won't have any sponsors (other than Zorbaz); we won't be doing an overnight; we won't be giving away door prizes; we won't be having any presentations...

We will have some mighty good chili...

We can count on cold weather, a warm place to eat great chili inside and a chance to shoot the bull with some great people. Hope to see you there!

I will update conditions as the day approaches!

For those of us that can't get there and back in daylight, is there a cozy place to stay overnight?

Try this place. I have been there to pick people up and they seemed to like it. Open year round.

Howdy, NE Cub, Paul gave you an option but I am not sure they will come pick you up. There are 2 or 3 hotels in Park Rapids, but I am sure they don't provide shuttle services. I have just contacted them to confirm.

The Park Rapids Fishing Derby is the same day as the Zorbaz Fly In, and that fills up the hotels (I think) (http://americanlegionderby.com/)...

For those who can fly in, swing over by Park Rapids to Fishhook Lake and take a look...pretty impressive sight from the air...

Fishhook Lake is immediately north of Park Rapids (shaped like a potato), and is not to be confused with Potato Lake (Steve Lewis calls it "Tater Lake", which is shaped like a fish hook)...apparently the poor guy who was assigned to register the lakes with the state made an error and switched them around!

I marked Chateau Zorbaz, which is just SE of Big Sand Lake. You can see the airport, which is just S of Park Rapids.

This just in from Bonnie Brand, owner of the Pine Cone Inn...

    Hello from Pine Cone,
    What fun!!
I’m sorry that I am not able to give them rides to and from because I don’t live on property. We are located about one mile away so I’m thinking it would be easy for others to give them a quick ride or many people walk.

My only openings for that week are Maple

I think your pilots would like our accommodations.

I just flew the super cub to Little Sand Lake, landed and am pleased to say that there is very little snow on the lake. It is a bit rough, but not too bad. At this point wheels will definitely be a possibility (if my skis weren't on my 8.50's would be just fine). Not much of a forecast for snow before next weekend, but stay tuned, we will update more next week. I hope Paul's lake is similar, as wheels would be good!

From a frozen lake newbie, how do you secure (tiedown) the airplane from blowing down to the other end of the lake?

As far as staying at the Pine Cone Inn, could I just fly over to their lake and tie up at their dock? What are the rules for landing on lakes in Minnesnowta?

The Zorbaz area received about 2" of snow last night, and that is good news for those wishing to fly in on wheels! I flew the super cub over to Zorbaz last Friday and it was pretty much bare ice. Rough, bare ice. The forecasts call for no additional snow between now and Saturday, with snow showers forecast for Saturday. The temperatures will stay well below freezing, so overflow is not an issue. Tom Peterson and Brad Johnson from Park Rapids will be providing an update on lake surface conditions, but it looks like a go for HOT CHILI for Saturday!

As a reminder, here are some photos from the 2016 Zorbaz Flyin...

This is the view from NE to SW...Zorbaz in the upper right corner...Notice the open water near Zorbaz. We will have it well marked so that noone goes for a swim...

Also, please note that the road that runs beside Zorbaz has either power lines or telephone lines running just over the open water, near the road. There is a solitaire "ball" on the wire. My advice is don't even get close to the wire.

Here is a photo with diagram depicting landing zone...

The forecast is still looking good for the Zorbaz flyin. Expecting snow flurries/showers, particularly in the afternoon.

It is still looking good for wheels, folks. I will be getting an update tomorrow, and will post info here.

Folks, we have decided to postpone the Zorbaz Chili Flyin for a week. While it is looking beautiful today, things are going to deteriorate tomorrow morning to low IFR conditions, with IFR persisting till late afternoon.

Robb has enthusiastically agreed to postpone the event to next Saturday, February 11, same time, same place! We will be updating you on the weather and snow conditions again next week. Bummer, but a nice solution for next weekend!

For those of you who have a hankerin for great chili, Robb will have it available tomorrow for those who might find just the right weather conditions to fly in and land in the usual area. Just beware of the open water area, shown in the photos I posted previously.

    Have a great weekend!

Wasn't able to check SC at the cabin so just drove over to find no planes at Zorbaz. Bummer! But good news this will hopefully give me an opportunity to fly over next weekend as my 12 is still in maintenance. Now going to enjoy a bowl of Chili. Hope it all works out. See you guys next weekend. Rod

Rod, thanks for the note. The wx has turned out better than expected...by far...but we would rather be safe than sorry. We will be looking for good wx next weekend!

    Safe travels, Rod.

I drove by yesterday also to check but didn't stop in. Had been in Park Rapids for the fishing derby and decided to take the long route home. I didn't get out to check the snow depth on the ice though. They are forecasting a couple days of snow between this weekend and next. Hope there isn't too much snow on the ice and I will be able to land with little wheels.

Thom Peterson will update the conditions at Zorbaz tomorrow afternoon, and post that here.

It is my understanding that there is very little snow on Little Sand Lake, but he will let us know.

    Frequencies for the Flyin:

    Zorbaz Little Sand Lake traffic....123.45

    KPKD unicom...123.00

You should add that the wheel guys need to be on there best soft field landing game.

You're absolutely right!! And tail-draggers would
be well-advised to get their tail whell
in the air as soon as possible to minimize drag.

LOL...Yes, I got that bud!! As was my 'No pictures yet' post!

Full disclosure, I had gone into town and spent a couple hours chiseling all the ice away from my hangar door in anticipation to fly on Saturday. I was supposed to go to WI to pick up a sled on Friday, guy called and asked if I could reschedule for Saturday and he would meet me part way and would lower the price paid due to the inconvenience of my plans.Who can resist saving some money. Saved me money and an additional 200 miles of driving, but I had to miss the fly in.

Sure looks like it was a great turn out and you couldn't have asked for a nicer day! Glad that many of you were able to make it! Oh, saw several planes parked on the ice by Twin Pines yesterday also.

Oh, Wow, great photos! Warms my heart to see these.

When we made the decision to postpone the flyin from the original date it was bittersweet...knowing that it was the safest thing to do from an aviation standpoint, but knowing that in so doing I would not be able to participate. For one, Julie and I had a trip planned for quite some time and it couldn't be moved. For two, I knew I was going to undergo "the knife" a few days after the original date and I could not count on being "up" for the flight.

Many thanks to Thom Peterson for stepping up to the plate to provide updates on the snow/lake conditions, and to Thom and Paul Johanning for setting out the pine markers for the landing zone. Lastly, Robb Swanson and his crew did their usual terrific job in having delicious chili ready for the crew!

Please let me share a story. Brad Johnson is the maintenance chief at Park Rapids Aviation, and he has been gracious in helping me with the maintenance and engine overhaul on my Cessna T210. Brad was instrumental in helping arrange for transformation of my super cub into Santa's Super Cub this past Christmas, when we needed to move to better, more predictable weather. I stationed my super cub for the past few weeks at Park Rapids, knowing that should the wx turn sour I would be able to drive up there and participate in the flyin on its original date. When it became impossible for me to be there I encouraged Brad to fly my super cub to the Zorbaz flyin and indeed he did, taking his son. Brad texted me the evening of the flyin to tell me the following:

"I picked Sam, my 6 yr old son up and home and went to Zorbaz. Joanna my wife drove and met us. We ate adn hung around and then Sam flew home with me. I gave Joanna and our neighbor rides from our lake. It was a great day. First solo ride for Sam and I together without mom. Making memories!"

By some measures, our little Zorbaz Ski Plane Chili flyin is by no means the biggest, but when I read messages like the one Brad sent me I can't think of a greater one.

You people have a positive impact on so many when you fly in to events like this. The neighbors are watching, the town people drive out to see the sight and you positively impact aviation. This is very important.

Plus, you touch people's lives...as Brad did with Sam.

    Thank you.
