Years ago, my uncle introduce my brother and me to hunting, and it remains the one common interest that we share some 40 odd years later. Oklahoma has some great deer hunting, and we spend lots of time (and far too much money) chasing them through the woods. Every now and then we come up with a trophy, or two, that makes it all worth while.
I, along with my brother, would like to extend an invitation to the folks on SuperCub.org who have youngsters who might like to join us this year for the Oklahoma Youth Deer Hunt. The season is October 14, 15, and 16. I would say that either a young man, or lady, between the ages of 11 and 16 would be about right. No previous experience is necessary, and whether Dad or Mom hunts is not a factor at all. The fact is our own Dad did not hunt - but once we showed an interest our parents were always very supportive.
The Youth Hunt is available to both residents and non-residents alike. The cost of the tag is insignificant for residents, $10, but unfortunately, $280 for non-residents. Adults are not allowed to harvest a deer during this season with a firearm. My brother and I will take the youth hunter, and his Dad/Mom/Grandad/Guardian to the field for the hunt. Will also provide instruction (and help where necessary) on field dressing, and caring for the animal after it is down. Since the hunter should have spent some time at the range prior to showing up for the hunt, you should make arrangements for your own firearm and become familiar with it in the weeks before the hunt.
If you have a son or daughter, grandson or granddaughter, that you would like to bring in for the weekend, please let me know. There will be two hunts available, with accommodations here at OK18 and/or possibly at my brother's farm in North Central Oklahoma, near KBKN. Preference will be given to first time hunters, with strong encouragement to take a doe for their first harvest. If the hunter can't spend the morning in the deer blind or deer stand without a video game, I would respectfully request that they not join us for the weekend. Bring the smart phone to take pictures, but no social media or virtual reality while in the woods with me.
There is no charge for the hunt or accommodations. Hunters will be responsible for license fees - which can be worked out if that is a show stopper (I have lots of grass to mow). We simply want to give a young man or young woman an opportunity to experience the thrill of the hunt, and decide for themselves if this is a sport that they may have an interest in. Like flying - you either have the passion for it, or you don't.
Please let me know if you have questions, or if you have someone in mind.
All the Best,
Clayton
