    drag anti-drag wire question

    My Dad and I are building a homebuilt PA-18-95 and are currently working on the wings. We are at the point of the build were its time to buy/build some drag/anti-drag wires. My question is what are most of you guys doing, such as building your own or buying them? I have noticed that there are some choices when it comes to wire diameter like 6-40 and 10-32 threads. Also Wag Aero sells the wires for the J3s but it appears to be for the wood spar wings, is anyone useing their wires on the metal spar Super Cubs?

    Univair sells the correct wires for a supercub. The threads are rolled threads and not made with a die. Any stressed area should have rolled threads. the ones cut with a die have stress risers in the bottom of the threads and will crack eventually under tension. Example: an bolts have rolled threads, if you run a die over the threads they are junk and not legal to use on aircraft. i know your experimental but those will break whether your certified or not.

    I see that the recommended tension on drag wires during setup is 10-15 lbs. I assume that there is a tremendous amount of pressure on these wires during flight, therefore justifying rolled thread vs cut threads. Has anyone had the problem of these wires failing or loosening up causing the fabric or structure on the wing to crinkle?

    Buy the correct wire as John said Univair has them and you won't have any problem.

    I have never seen these wires loosen up however i have seen 1 or2 wires broken on some early champs. I believe someone ran a die over these threads to try and clean them up. Never saw any failures on cubs.

    D&E has wires too. Another place to check.
